My iPhone 13 Pro will not connect to WiFi

It shows it’s connected in settings, but doesn’t display the wifi symbol at the top of my screen, and when I try to open certain apps, it says I’m not connected to wifi. I’ve tried EVERYTHING on the troubleshooting list!

Help!

I recently purchased a new iPhone 13 pro max and I noticed that the Wi-Fi icon was not showing up. It was showing connected with the check mark next to it but at the top of my phone it just showed 5g. So I reset the network settings and it was the same thing. So I turned the wifi off and even my cell data was not really working. When I would go to apps like DoorDash and YouTube it said offline. But if I went to Safari and pulled it up it worked but was running very slow. So I called Apple and they screen shared with me and could not figure it out so they sent me a replacement. I set my replacement up and it was doing the same exact thing. I then begin to believe that it was my SIM card. So I called my carrier and we both realized that my SIM card was 4g instead of 5g so they shipped me one out. But after I got off the phone with them I noticed that there was a vpn switched that was moving back and fourth. If I tried to turn it off it would switch right back on. So I was flipping through my apps and I saw I had downloaded a Norton VPN and it was on. So I uninstalled the app and my wife signal showed up. After all of that thinking it was the other phone and the new one it was the darn VPN that was running…

For me, I thought my VPN was off.

But when I went to Settings, I saw that "VPN" was a row that was visible underneath "Personal Hotspot" (above "Notifications") and that it was flickering between On/Off. So I went to my VPN app and turned it off and deleted the app just for good measure.

Then I was able to connect to wifi and finish setting up my phone properly.

A few days later, I re-downloaded my VPN app and I am able to access wifi perfectly fine with or without VPN.

(I didn't wait a few days for any particular reason, I was just busy.)

That's what worked for me. If it doesn't work for you, maybe it's a different issue that's affecting your phone.

But I hope that helps anyone who is experiencing the same issue as my phone.

Delete any VPN apps and VPN profiles, and restart your phone. Then see if it connects. Did you transfer content from another phone that had VPN installed? If you did, the VPN parameters for the other phone were transferred to the new phone, and probably aren’t compatible with the new hardware.

So you can try reinstalling the VPN, allowing it to configure itself for the new hardware. That may work. Although you really don’t need VPN on an iPhone; basically what it does is slow down your phone, introduce connectivity problems with some sites and some apps, all for no benefit because your iPhone already only connects with SSL, so everything is already end-to-end encrypted which means it is “safe” even on public networks. And your phone also has Apple’s Private Relay, which is sort of a super VPN that is much more secure than “standard” VPNs.

  • Can you turn Wi-Fi on in the Settings app?
  • Do you have a VPN app and/or VPN profile on your phone? If you do, delete them and restart your phone.
  • Next, go to Settings/General/Transfer or Reset Phone/Reset/Reset Network Settings - you won’t lose any data, but it will erase your Wi-Fi passwords.

If none of these steps fix it most likely you have a hardware problem.
