Network Utility

On High Sierra (I Mac late 2009) Network Utility is ok for wifi, but no Info on Ethernet. I get such info from other "sources", yet I am not sure that there is not a problem with my Mac.

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Sys Prefs>Network>highlight the Interface you're using>Advanced>TCP/IP>Configure IPv4: Using DHCP.

System Preferences>Network>choose interface>Advanced>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS.

System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

8.8.8.8

8.8.4.4

1.1.1.1

9.9.9.9

Apply.

Good to hear we're making some progress! :)

System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the Hardware tab>Configure>Manually, try 100baseTC Half Duplex, then Full Duplex, then 1000baseT Half Duplex for tests.

Might try MTU of 1492 also.

Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?

Very helpful to solve my initial question, so now I have Ethernet info on the Network Utility, thank you very much. Now, the need for Network Utility was, and it is, to find clues to the low speed Ethernet, while having cable Cat5e, gigabite router, and I have now the confirmation info on Network Utility that Link Speed is 1 Gb/s. Speed Test however with this MAC is max aprox 150Mbps.

A laptop connected on the same RJ45 cable and the same router has aprox 850 Mbps (download/upload). So, apparently everything is ok with my MAC, I mean info received from the system on hardware/software, nevertheless the actual tested speed is very low. I would be grateful for any new idea.

The story is that I have an Internet provider, also from them I have the gigabite router, and this provider have also their speed test recommended. I was unhappy for a long time by testing the speed, while I have the right equipment and software. Upon my request, today the company replace the router, a better one, and the engineer got on his laptop the expected speed, over 900Mbps. This evening I tested the speed with Ookla, the outcome was the same, about 150Mbps. Suddenly I noticed that Oocla has Speed Test for various Windows, Apple, tablets, laptops, etc. As soon as I selected MAC, I got the right speed for my computer, Download 918Mbps/Upload 922Mbps. My conclusion is that my Internet provider Speed Test is not suitable for MAC. It is a bad news here, because is a very respectful communication Company, TV, internet , mobiles...
