Slow performance on Macbook Pro M1

I'm seeing some slow performance on my Macbook Pro M1 running Catalina from time to time. After a reboot, everything is fine, but then after a day or so, there will be times during the day when my Macbook will come to a slow crawl then about 30 seconds later it will speed up again.

Opening up Activity Monitor shows that the process, perfpowerservices, will chew up over 100% of the CPU. Other high CPU usage processes include WindowServer and sysmond.

Any ideas what may be going on?
