cannot shut down

Finder is in a loop, trying to move some documents to Trash. Any attempt to Shut Down results in, cannot shut down because something is running. Within Finder an Activity Monitor, I cannot find what to shut down.

Force shut down the computer by holding the power button until it shuts down. This may take 10-20 seconds.


Restart but hold the shift key, keep holding it down until you get the login screen. This is Safe Boot, it can take 10 minutes or more as the computer does some self repairs.


After logging in, the computer will be sluggish in Safe Mode. Verify that the endless loop is gone. Then reboot normally. See if the computer is back to normal.
