Trying to make bulleted list in Notes app on iPadOS 15

I have a bunch of items separated by line breaks in notes on my iPad, and I would like to convert them to a bulleted list. When I select the txt and tap the selection, the only formatting options I see are BIU and indentation. Several notes suggest tapping on Aa, but I do not see that icon anywhere. The icons at the top right include checklist and markup, but not text formatting.

What am I missing?

Thanks!

Hi LouBenjamin, the Aa formatting menu is available from the toolbar at the top of the software keyboard. If the toolbar is not displaying with the Aa option, navigate to Settings > General > Keyboard and switch on Shortcuts. If Shortcuts is already switched on, switch off then back on.

It is also available from the Markup toolbar.

If using an external keyboard there'll be a floating toolbar at the bottom with the formatting menu available. You can also use the keyboard shortcut ⇧⌘7. Hold down the ⌘ key to see available keyboard shortcuts.

You can also create bullets manually. To start a bulleted list simply type an asterisk followed by a space.

Thanks for the *+space trick. That's somewhat helpful by itself.

I just figured out that the formatting and grid menus do not appear in the floating keyboard. It took me a minute to figure out how to switch back to the full keyboard, but once I did, the menus appeared. Now, there are new wrinkles -- apparently the full keyboard does not support slide to type, and it also appears that the split keyboard and undocked full keyboard options have been removed... or are they just relocated?

I wonder if this is a problem with notes on the M1iPad Pro. The note that I am formatting was created on the iPad. The toolbar does not show the grid or formatting icons:

I have Notes synced with my iMac, and I was able to add the bullets in Notes on my desktop. They immediately appeared in the note on my iPad. I just can't format text "natively" on my iPad.

Greetings, LouBenjamin.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. It’s understandable that you’d want to know how to use bullet points in Notes.

You mentioned that the text that you are trying to convert is formatted. Are you able to create bullet points in a new Note?

“When you're in a note, tap the table button  or the formatting button  to add a table, title, heading, or bulleted list. You can also touch and hold  to quickly open a list of formatting options.” Use Notes on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

If so, the issue may be with the individual Note. We hope this helps! Thanks for being a part of the community.

Sincerely.
