I'm getting iPhone notifications about an unknown device is with me

This is pretty scary. I keep getting notifications that an unknown device is with me and has been tracking me from Find My. It shows a comprehensive map of locations I’ve been to. What could it be? I clicked remove device and it said failed to connect to server. I restarted the phone and now 2 objects show up.

I MAY have a fix. This has been happening to us as well for 2+ months now

,I have spent hours on the home with Apple on our family shared account as we all were receiving the notifications and nothing has helped until now and here is what seems to be working for us. First off, remove apple AirPods from your Apple ID account completely. Then restore the AirPods completely as to a new condition by opening the cover and holding down the back pair button for 15 sec or more until light on the front pulsates in white light. Then, and this is very important! Go away from your home or business or school WIFI! You need to be on cell signal only, Go a few blocks away and then pair the AirPods to original owner ONLY, …… Since doing these steps, we are not getting the notifications that unknown AirPods are following you notifications anymore, I hope this helps, please let me know.

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities Do24minh,

We understand you're seeing a message about a device moving with you. The "If you see an "AirTag Found Moving With You" message" section of the following page may help: What to do if you find an AirTag or get an alert that an AirTag is with you

If you're still unable to disable the device, try restarting your iPhone normally, before attempting again.

Should the behavior persist, contact Apple Support for additional assistance.

Cheers!

The message is for your security. It means there is a tracking device near you. It’s to let you know that someone may have planted an Apple tracking device in something you are carrying, and it’s to warn you of a possible stalker. But it can also mean that there is someone near you who has their own tracking device, and they have been close to you long enough for it to register (15 minutes). If it happens in only one location or in a crowd moving in the same direction you are, but doesn’t follow you everywhere, you can safely ignore it.

it’s insane to me that so many people are calling in and they still haven’t fixed this. It just happened to me and they advised I go to the local police. They told me that they’re unable to remove it because it is not associated with my Apple ID. In my instance the last place it recognized being on me was my car. I did see someone post about this possibly being an issue with AirPods… my bf did have his AirPods in the car earlier today, so maybe that’s why ? I’m going to try to locate this possible air tag again if there’s even one and try to connect my bf’s AirPods to my phone and see if it changes anything. It’s super scary. I dont even want to leave my house now. 😵‍💫

I had this happen to me the other night. I was traveling in a car with family, including my nephew who was using his AirPods Pro. Aside from what feels like an invasion of privacy, the dangerous part is that my iPhone would have allowed me to send a tone to his AirPods while in use. I have never connected to his device to use his AirPods, nor the opposite. Just about the only thing we share is occasional Wi-Fi and of course we are in each other’s contacts.

So does this mean that a stranger on a bus who gets this alert can send a nasty loud tone to my AirPods Pro… while in use?

When you say “family shared account” do you mean you have one Apple ID that is shared between 2 or more people, or you each have individual accounts that are grouped with Apple’s Family Sharing feature?

If you mean you have multiple users on one Apple ID that is not a recommended practice. If you are not doing this, and have Family Sharing, ignore the rest of this post.

Apple IDs are personal; they shouldn’t be shared any more than you would share a toothbrush. If you share an Apple ID with someone else many bad things will happen. Each user should have their own Apple ID, then you can create Family Sharing→What is Family Sharing? - Apple Support. That way you can share what you want to share and not share what you don’t want to share.

It is OK to share an Apple ID among devices used by one person, such as an iPhone, an iPad and a Mac; in fact, it is a very useful thing to do. But not between devices used by different people.

Here is Apple’s FAQ: https://appleid.apple.com/faq/#!&page=faq. See the 4th bullet item.
