Can't open files older than August 2021

I took my laptop to me on a trip to Europe, and while we were there, something happened. Since we got home, I can't open any files from before the trip -- not PDFs, Excel sheets, Pages documents, Numbers documents, etc. I think I might have gotten a corrupted version of Acrobat Reader, or something like that, when we were in France and trying to get new tickets when our flight home was canceled. Help!! I got rid of the Reader, but in the process I'm wondering if I deleted some file or permission that is necessary for opening my older documents. I need to be able to open my old files. Please help!

Uninstalling your Acrobat Reader should not be an issue

How to uninstall and reinstall Acrobat - Adobe Help Center

You can try a SafeBoot to clear system cache files—reboot as normal and test

You can get a get a good look at your System config. and reveal conflicts or issues, you can download/run this trusted utility https://etrecheck.com
