Itunes says my backup encryption password is incorrect although it is correct

I created a full encrypted password on itunes (on windows 10) before fully erasing my iphone. When trying to restore it from itunes I keep getting the "incorrect password" error although the password I enter is correct (I entered it 10 minutes before trying to restore it so I know it perfectly).

I have googled the problem and seems that is quite common and that there is no other solution than assuming that you won't be able to recover it and use another backup that you might or might not have.

Does anybody know why this is happening? This is a total nonsense and very harmful itunes bug!

Was anybody able to fix this? If I am unable to recover this backup I might need to go back to an icloud backup made over a month ago, meaning that I will lose a lot of data, so any help is welcome!

The only possibility is that you had made an encrypted backup in the past with a different password. Making a new one won’t replace the old password unless you used the change password feature.

If you haven’t erased the phone yet you can create a new backup with a new password—>About encrypted backups on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

If neither of those work you get unlimited guesses, so try to guess what password you might have entered back when. If you are like most people it will be a password that you reused. And to speed up the process click to change the password and you will be prompted immediately.

A fresh version of iTunes doesn’t matter; the password is saved on the phone, not iTunes, and it is actually the decryption key. So if you made an encrypted backup on a computer, then made another backup on a completely different new computer the backup password from the first computer would still apply to the backup on the new computer.

When you back up an phone to a new computer for the first time, unless you previously wiped the phone, it knows that a backup password is required and provides what it knows that password to be. If you wiped the phone first then it is essentially a new phone, and a backup of that new phone to a new computer will have no backup password unless you checked Encrypt in iTunes.

When you go to restore an encrypted backup it needs the backup password that was used the very first time that an encrypted backup of that same phone was made. It needs it because the backup is encrypted using the backup password as the encryption key.

Regarding your comment about a new computer with a new iTunes, how can you have an encrypted backup on a new computer that was never used for a backup?

Ok, and what happens when you reset the iphone, the password is lost and you can't upload the backup or it resets everything but the password persists on the iphone? When you create the backup it asks you for a password, isn't that the password you have to enter??

Moreover, after I installed the icloud backup I tried to restore the itunes backup but still got the same error.

So: what password does itunes ask for when trying to install the encrypted backup? The one you enter when generating the backup, right? Which it is also stored on the phone, correct? What happens when you reset the iphone, the password is lost or it is kept on the phone?

If it uses the password entered when creating the backup, it's the password I have been entering...

Hi Tolengo,

Those are great questions. In order to restore from an encrypted backup, it will require the password that was set up when the backup was created. You can restore from an iCloud backup and when doing so it will restore whatever content was on the device when the backup was created and it will not require you to use the encrypted iTunes backup. The password iTunes is requesting is the password that was setup when you created the backup, not a password that you are currently using on the device.

Best regards

Hey Lawrence.

I downloaded and installed itunes on my computer and proceeded to create an encrypted backup.

When creating it I checked "encrypted backup", it asked me for the old password (which surprised me because it was the first time using itunes on that computer) and the new one (I put the same on both (3) fields) and it went ahead and created the backup...

As I entered the same password for all the fields and the old password should've been correct (since it created the backup), I know that the password I entered when trying to install the backup is right.

Hello Tolengo,

Thanks for the additional details. Since we do not keep the passwords stored that was entered, we're unable to provide any additional steps to resolve the incorrect password for the iTunes backup. It is something that the system only keeps up with and if it is not recognized, then the steps in the article provided earlier may help resolve the issue. If it does not, then we'd recommend using an older backup that is not encrypted or an iCloud backup if one is available.

Have a great day!

Hi Lawrence,

I had already deleted the phone (I discovered that the backup was no good then trying to install it and recover my iphone) so I can't perform a new backup.

Regarding the password, it was a fresh new installation of itunes (I don't use itunes, I just installed it to create the backup) so there was no password associated with it rather than the one I used to create the backup...

I am pretty sure that it's an itunes bug because, for example, it keeps asking me if I want to update my iphone to iOS 15 although I keep checking the "Don't ask me again" checkbox...

I decided to go for the old icloud backup I had. I lost a ton of information (thanks Steve and Tim!) but I needed to use my phone.

Thanks for your reply anyway.

Hi Karina,

Thanks for your rpely.

So, if I try to install an encrypted backup from itunes it will require the password I entered in itunes when creating it, right? That sounds pretty straight forward (and clear and easy to understand). So, what does the iphone have to do in all this with the password?

According to this thought, the phone shouldn't be involved at all with the password, right? So, why isn't itunes accepting the password I set? Or is it because the password is stored in the phone and it is lost when resetting it (which makes it nonsense when trying to reset the phone and restoring it from an itunes backup)?
