Persistent legacy "My Places" on Apple Maps

  • Apple Maps keeps showing a guide called "My Places" that can't be deleted
  • It lists old places that I've pinned in the very first versions of Apple Maps (when Guides feature hadn't been released yet). It also includes the legacy custom named red pins.
  • Even if I delete the +200 places one by one or move then to other guides, It comes back every time Maps is setup in a new device or a restored device and syncing with all my devices iOS MacOS
  • This is annoying, disappointing and many other users are trying to explain this bug for a while but the answers never get to the point. This is a bug for sure.

Just finished a call with Apple Support. Verified that there is no way to delete the persistent legacy "My Places" with the usual right-click & delete. Then verified that iCloud Sync was enabled for Maps on all my devices (iPhone 13 Max Pro, iPad Mini 6 and MacBook Pro). Verified that all devices were running the latest OS. Tried a number of minor things that made no difference.

I had already cleared Significant Locations history on my iPhone and iPad, but had not done that on my MacBook Pro. When I did that on my MacBook followed with shutting down and restarting Maps, after approximately 2-3 minutes the single legacy location under "My Places" disappeared, and so did the "My Places" guide!

The Apple technician seemed just as surprised as I was when we noticed "My Places" was gone. :-)

Recap: The trick seems to be to clear history on "Significant Locations" on ALL your devices.

On iOS devices, go to Settings / Privacy / Location Services / System Services / Significant Locations and touch "Clear History".

On macOS, go to Settings / Privacy & Security / Privacy tab / System Services (Details...) / Significant Locations (Details...) and click the "..." inside the small circle in the lower right corner of the left side of the "Recent Records" display (a map will appear on the right side of that display). Click "Clear History" to wipe out all Significant Locations from the Mac:

Hi andrepollus,

I think I encountered the same issue, and I tried the solution by judysings and it actually worked for me at least, so I just shout out in case it works for anyone else.

My initial issue:

I got two places labeled in Apple Maps, and now they are showing under "My Guide", I tried to delete them on my iPhone by jump into "My Guide" and swipe right and hit delete on the place I need to delete, however, one of these two place will be showing right after it being deleted.

The method by judysings that worked:

Since I am using my Macbook and logged in with the same apple ID, so I open Apple Maps on my Macbook.

if the Maps app is not showing the searching bar, just simply hit the top left icon "Toggle sidebar" to make it visible.

From there I can see "My Guide" with the one place that I cannot delete on my iPhone.

Then, as per judysings, " Control-click the Guide", and I managed to delete it.

Hope this helps~

@DavidZL

"My Guide" did not include a Delete Guide option; and did not allow renaming. The failure to be able to delete it was frustrating (a place I parked a rental car at some 8 years ago). The other frustration was pinned places in that Guide which included a Delete option which failed to delete a pin (a brief flash and the pin was back).

I solved the problem by having iCloud synchronize Maps across all devices. First on my iPhone then on my Macbook.

On the iPhone: Settings > Your Apple ID > iCloud > turn on iCloud Drive and turn on Maps.

On the computer: System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Options... > Documents (a tab) > then click the checkbox Maps.

Warning: On the computer this permanently deleted all Map locations from my Macbook. If you need to save them they can be exported. Right-click a Map Guide, selecting Share, and then picking an export option (Mail, Messages, Notes, etc.).

As a note: my iPhone did not have the odd "My Guide" set of pinned places. That made me realize Maps was not synced to my iPhone. I decided to sync Maps to see what that would do. It worked to delete the persistent "My Places".

There is certainly a bug somewhere causing the failure to allow deletion of an "old" Guide on a Macbook.

I have the same cannot delete problem with an ancient "My Guide". It cannot be deleted. It cannot be renamed. The pinned places within it cannot be removed/deleted.

The "Control-click the Guide" solution is not an option because there is no delete option. "Control-click the Guide" only show a deleted option for newer guides. In fact, you only need to right-click on a new guide to see the delete option. If you mouse over a Guide you will see an encircled lower-case "i" which when clicked shows edit option for the Guide. With new guides you can rename the Guide, Change Key Photo, and Delete Guide. With "My Guide" you can ONLY change the key photo. It does not allow for renaming. It has no delete option.

Attached, hopefully, are two images showing this Persistent legacy problem/bug.

The steps you provided are the standard steps to delete any guide. What I mention is the fact that this specific "My Places" guide (that is in fact an automatic collection of the OLD Apple Maps favourites imported to the new Apple Maps that has guides) reappears again and again AFTER being DELETED every time a new device syncs to iCloud. Many people having this issue. It seems nobody here can solve this, great, so I will contact Apple Support as you've suggested. Thank you.

Boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

That wasn't my report. Please read before answer. None of your options are related to what I said and I wouldn't had the work of posting this if not researched sufficiently about it on advance.

This is not just a Guide but the old legacy Apple Maps favourites called "My Places" that keeps appearing AS a Guide in the new version of Apple Maps, that introduced Guides feature. It keeps returning everytime a new device is setup on iCloud and it mess with all the other guides (e.g. places that were in other guides return to this "My Places" guide; places that I've deleted already return to this "My Places" guide.

Hi andrepollux,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities.

We understand that you haven’t been able delete a Guide from the Maps app and we’re happy to help.

To delete a Guide from the Maps on a iPhone go to Edit at the bottom of My Places, select the Guide, then tap Delete.

To delete a Guide from the Maps app on Mac you would need to Control-click the Guide, Edit Guide, then Delete Guide.

If the Guide still can’t be deleted, follow the steps found in the Apple Support articles below.

If Maps isn't working on your Apple device

If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open

If an app on your Mac stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open

Best regards.

andrepollux,

We do understand that this is about the Guides under "My Places" in Maps. The steps the we previously provided also applies to the "My Places" Guides. For additional information about Guides in Maps, see the Apple Support articles below.

Organize places in My Guides in Maps on iPhone

Use food and travel Guides in Maps on Mac

If the Apple Support articles and the steps to delete the Guides didn't help, then you should contact Apple Support for further assistance.

Have a nice day.

Thanks. But I don't think it's a matter of booting in Safe Mode. The problem happens in any brand new device (iPhone 13 Mini, MacBook Air M1) with clear setup (without any backup/restore/font/app installation). As soon as iCloud syncs, the problem reappears in all devices connected to same iCloud account: this My Places guide reappears, even if previously, and persistently deleted).
