When I am trying to listen to background sounds and lock my phone, my airpods will disconnect from bluetooth. I have to reconnect my airpods but when I try to listen to backgrounds sounds again, it will play for a few seconds and then disconnect.

We understand that your AirPods are disconnecting from iPhone and you were able to review one fo the support articles. Make sure you're running the latest software update in Settings > General > Software Update. Reset AirPods.

my airpods keep disconnecting from bluetooth while background sounds is active.
