Bluetooth Calls on iPhone 13 Pro Sound Poor After A Few Minutes

Ever since I began using the new iPhone 13 Pro, any type of Bluetooth calls (cellular, FaceTime Audio, Discord, anything) to my Xbox Wireless Headset sound extremely poor after using for 5-10 minutes.

The call goes from good quality to dark robotic-sounding, muffled and difficult to understand. It happens sort of at random, and occasionally improves at certain points and goes back to being poor.

The only current “remedy” I’ve found is switching the call to speaker or phone and immediately back, and it “resets” the process and starts the quality back to good again and eventually diminish into the quality I’ve described.

This only started occurring when I moved to my new iPhone 13 Pro on T-Mobile. I didn’t have this issue with the Bluetooth headset on my iPhone X. I also just tested FaceTime Audio on my iPad Air (2020, with latest update) using the headset and do not experience these issues I’m having on my 13 Pro (also running the latest software).

I’ve tried resetting the Xbox Wireless Headset, removing it on Bluetooth and reconnecting, etc. to no avail. I’m guessing it has to do with my phone rather than the headset, since it worked fine with my iPhone X and works fine with my iPad Air fine too.

Are these Bluetooth call issues a known issue? Or any suggested steps to fix these problems (that doesn’t involve a reset)?

Thanks in advance.

tldr, I had the same problem, turning off my old Apple Watch seems to have fixed it.

I had an iPhone X that I used with AirPods and Bluetooth sound in my car. I listened to music, podcasts and made calls with that setup without trouble.

I got an iPhone 13 Pro and kept the same setup from my old phone with the same usage pattern, and noticed occasional bursts of static lasting several seconds on both my Bluetooth setups. I read this forum thread and turned off my old Apple Watch several weeks ago, and the problem seems completely gone.

One interesting thing is, I never wore the watch. It just sat at home on its charger.

I work in the software industry and have been pretty detailed with the info I have provided and made it clear that it is an issue between the “phone” and “Bluetooth”, since there are no issues with playing music on Pandora, FaceTime, other apps, etc. My advisor seemed to understand that “link”.

should I still mention the Bluetooth bitrate compression problem to them?

Somewhat separate issue, but I’ve also had my AirPods replaced 4 times since getting the iPhone 13 Pro. I get weird noises and pulsing sounds (“seashell up to ear” noises pulsing every 2-3 seconds in my right EarPod) in my latest brand new pair Apple replaced a month ago. I wonder if this is related to that bitrate scenario….

Speechless how incapable the support of Apple is. There is no point explaining this issue to a person without technical background other than an engineer of Apple.

I don’t think you letter will reach the ceo :D

Your best bet is to write to some famous tech youtubers ( e.g. mkbhd etc) who would make a video about this issue and only then there’s a chance this will spread out to the public so apple will notice it finally.

Just dm them via mail, twitter, instagram…

keep it short and simple. They often do comparison videos between ios and Android. This may be a perfect topic to compare the Bluetooth mic quality of the airpods (or any earbuds) with the iPhone and a Samsung for example. Just to find out how poor the Bluetooth mic quality is on iPhone compared to any other phone due to low bitrate.

I’ve hit a wall with these people. New specialist, because the previous does not respond anymore, basically I was told it’s a software issue and they’ll keep me posted if and when they can fix it. They have no further solution at this time and won’t offer any type of refund or discount. Told me I can sell my phone and get something else. Super helpful. I’m done with them.

Thanks for the update. I had shared this theory with my advisor last week and he did not think it could be the cause, but I'm starting to think it is. I am turning my Series 2 watch off today and will see if the problem occurs, as it's been happening like crazy for me this week. I sure as heck will not be paying full price for a new Apple Watch... Apple should do the right thing and replace for free or provide some sort of credit at a minimum since this watch does not work with their own $1,000+ phone.

That was definitely the problem for me. I asked my senior advisor for a discount on a watch and she said we don't do that. I went to the Apple store and asked and they said we don't give discounts, your watch is old you just need to replace it. I said well the watch works fine and nobody told me it wouldn't be compatible with the 13 Pro bluetooth. He said Apple is VERY transparent with the fact that it's not compatible. Funny, nobody told me that and he said it's on our website, I couldn't find it. Every Apple representative I've talked to including 3 Senior advisors know nothing about this problem yet they are telling me they are transparent about it??? After 3 months of problems and hours on the phone with Apple and running around I had to figure out the problem myself by reading one of these blogs and then spend another $400 on a new watch. It's a good thing I like Apple products or I would tell them to shove it where the sun doesn't shine and switch to Android

I know exactly how you feel. I bought a 7 series watch and no issues other than once in a while it will drop the bluetooth in the car. I too Wass ghosted by 3 different senior Apple advisors who all said they were not aware of any problems of this nature, which I found strange since the advisor in the store said Apple is VERY transparent about the fact that the bluetooth on the 13 pro is not compatible with older watches. Not only was the last senior advisor unhelpful, she was condescending toward me. If I didn't hate Androids so much I would make a switch. Very disappointed in Apple at this point
