Preview - Quartz Filter Reduce File Size has no effect

Recently I noticed that exporting a PDF using Quartz filter - Reduce File size has zero impact on the size of the PDF file.

Exporting from Preview as PDF, export using Quartz filter, and simply print to PDF from within the application (in this case FireFox) all result in the same file size.

I have seen other topics related to this, yet none have provided me with insight into solving this.

You need to launch ColorSync Utility and create a new Quartz filter with the compression settings you need. I have a number of them. This is just one:

When you quit ColorSync Utility the filter will be available in Preview's export option.

You can create a number with different pixel resolutions and jpeg compression to get what you want.

When a PDF is created, it uses a variety of compression algorithms tailored to the type of content within the PDF. At some point, it cannot be further reduced in size as its content is already at maximum compression. That might be one reason for your lack of results in Preview, and if you control the PDF content, then there are other potential options you can pursue to further reduce its content size before it becomes a PDF.
