Geofencing problems with iOS15.01

All, I just set up a workaround on my partners 12 Mini running 15.2:

- open the "Shortcuts" app

- press back to get to the homepage

- create a new "automation" that is triggered by arriving at required location, and make it open relevant app. Set the location size ring to be about the same size as your geofence size for whatever app youre using

-Create another automation for leaving required location, again to open the relevant app with the appropriate location ring

That will now open the app automatically (in my case Smartthings) to enable triggering of location based automation,which works because the app is foreground even if screen is off. Have just confirmed that this works outbound and inbound, have finally got her phone to trigger my heating.

Obviously this is a short term fix until Apple fix what is clearly a bug. For a long term fix I recommend Android!

15.3 has fixed this issue for me using orchestrated MobiLinc and for others using other apps.

As mentioned here several times, at least iOS 15.3 must be installed. From this version on, the geofence works again.

Just to share what I found.

My iphone is alive and works just fine like before.

Accuracy check, below 10m to 8m on a vehicle.

All accuracy checked through GPS status app.

I know this might not work for all but if you remember using gadgets alike, try to unplug it or forget it from your device.

my wife and I have installed the IOS 15.3 on our Iphone 13. It looks like my Geofencing is now functioning as intended , on our Honeywell home app. Before, it seemed like it was a background location sharing issue, as the geofencing would update our locations only when we opened the app. Today, everything updated itself without opening the app... This is giving me hope.

Hope it stays like that!

Most of us are reporting the geofencing issues have been fixed with 15.3. What apps are still having issues? I would ask the developers of those apps for an update to find out if it is still iOS that's the problem or the apps themselves because for most of us 15.3 did fix the problem.

André2859, Update your device to IOS 15.3 if you haven't already. This should fix your geofencing issues! Good luck

I contacted Apple twice on this issue. Note I am only using geofence with Orchestrated Mobilinc - a home automation app. 

1st contact checked my settings to ensure i had location services on for the app, that background refresh was on for the app. And also checked my date/ time - my time zone was set to manual, so she asked me to change it to automatic. She also asked that I do some testing using screen capture to send videos to them. I ran at least 4 tests with screen recording and none failed.

Then i went out again and didn’t run screen recording and of course, it failed. 

i called Apple again and this time the tect told me to reset location & privacy. This is under general, bottom of the menu, transfer or reset phone, reset, reset location &privacy, reset. I did this and will now run some more tests and report back here.

I can also confirm upgrading to 15.3 fixed issues with geofencing with the apps Geofency and PhotoSync running in background mode so far. Hopefully this stays stable now. Still testing further…

Yes, there is definitely an issue with geofencing on iOS 15.

Our app (mileage tracker) relies on geofencing / region monitoring and has worked flawlessly until iOS 14.8. After updating to iOS 15 (as well as 15.0.1 and 15.0.2), the app stopped receiving regular region exit and/or region entry events, and is no longer launched to the background when the user moves, even a significant distance. This happens only on some devices, while on others there is no issue (!?)

When the issue occurred, restarting the device helped some users, but did not help others.

Even for a given user, on a given device, region monitoring would work perfectly well on one day, and fail completely on another day, causing all trips on that day to be missed by our app.

We were able to reproduce the issue on some test devices and reported it to Apple on 8 October 2021 (Feedback ID FB9687008). We have not yet heard back from Apple about this ticket.

On one of our test devices, restarting the iPhone helped "resolve" the issue and we have not been able to reproduce the issue on that device again. On other devices, users have reported that even after multiple restarts the behaviour is unpredictable. Geofencing works on one day, then not working on the next day...

Really frustrating, and no word from Apple on this so far!

Exactly the same issue, Alarm system, Photosync etc dont work anymore with geofencing. tested Homekit geofencing and that is working perfectly. So it seems geofencing is broken voor non apple apps.

It probably works again because you restarted your iPhone or opened the app. It will stop working in 1-2 days if you don’t open the app or restart the app

Apple is aware of the geofencing issue and a fix is coming in IOS 15.3.

Be patient all. It’s coming.

I've since my last post the IFTTT app in the background and it works now. Didn't close or restart the IFTTT app for thee days now. IFTTT with applet for Tahoma works fine now.
