MacBook Pro 16'' i9 kernel panics

For almost one week now my mac has been having kernel panics after almost every sleep session. When I open the lid after sleep, the fans work loudly for 1 second and then "Your mac has restarted because of a problem" appears. This is frustrating as it has been happening multiple times a day. I tried to turn off power nap and automatic graphics switching and no results. I did some resets with apple support but still no results.

The same happened to me (16'' i9, 32GB, 1TB )

I've made countless attempts to fix it: turning off power nap and automatic graphics switching, updates, clean install, SMC and NVRAM reset, and so on.

In the end, I've booked a Genius appointment.

The logic board was faulty and it was sent for replacement.

So if after waking from sleep you notice the fans spin loudly for 1-2 seconds followed by a kernel Panic try to do an SMC reset.

If the issue persists after the SMC reset book a service appointment as is extremely likely a hardware fault.

Ok so if you've purchased it in the EU ---- that's good news.

The statutory warranty period in Europe is 2 years since 2012 (all EU countries)

Try a clean install and see if that fixes it.

If the issue persists I recomend you book an Apple appointment in the EU country you're in (even different from the one you've purchased it).

The Genius visit/diagnostic costs nothing and it will be your decision to leave it for repair or not.

Bring the invoice from the reseller with you showing the purchase date.

They might be willing to handle or help you with the warranty flow (contacting the reseller, etc).

No matter what your warranty is 2 years if the product was purchased from any EU country so you shouldn't pay anything for a potential repair.

My laptop does the exact same thing. I suspected it is not a hardware issue because it is not happening in safe mode, but who knows. Next I will try saving my data and factory resetting it. Have you tried that? I am out of the 1 year of service so I do not want to hurry to take it in for repair because it will probably be extremely expensive. If it is faulty, do they just replace it for free?

Thankfully I am in Europe, but unfortunately, I did not buy it from Apple. I am currently not in the country that I bought it in so it will be a nightmare to fix. Hopefully, the company I bought it from will be easy to work with. I am absolutely not paying 960 euros to fix a machine that was almost 3000 and it is barely one year old. Outrageous.

Yes, I have tried that as well (clean install via the internet recovery, wiping out all data)

I put it back to sleep without restoring anything from the TC backup and got the same panic (with the original OS and no extra APP data restored).

Also not trying to disappoint you but mine as well as yours was working fine in SAFE MODE

There is a simple explanation for that. While in safe mode the "usage" is limited (look at the graphics quality when dragging a window) and the discrete GPU is not used all (integrated one is the one used in safe mode)

Also, it was not returning any error on Diagnostic mode that you can access with the "D key" (but it did return errors on the diagnostic APP that the "Genius" in the store used when I brought it to them)

So running fine in safe mode does not exclude a hardware issue especially one related to the GPU

All my kernel panics logs were GPU-related like the one pasted below. Worth trying to look into your pannic logs for simmilar entries (containing GPU Panic)

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f91214953): GPU Panic: mux-regs 5 3 7f 1f 0 0 severity 3 WS-ready 0 switch-state 13 IG FBs 0 EG FBs 0:1f power-state 0 3D idle HDA idle system-state 0 power-level 20:20 power-retry 0:0 connect-change 0 : [3:0:0][PPLIB] Failed Power Play Initialization. TTL Error Message:

I don't know what to say about your warranty case.

Lucky for me in Europe/SPAIN by law the warranty is 2 years (1st year covered by Apple and the 2nd by the seller -- Apple also in my case).

Mine was purchased in April 2020 so they covered the repair cost -- $960 if I would translate EUR to USD.
