Finder / Connect to Server - does NOT work

I have finally found out that Finder / Connect to Server does NOT work

Earlier I had problems to test the feature.

Now I found out how to test.

Test steps:

Open bash

1) telnet localhost 445

this gives no connection - because no SMB server is running on the macOS

2) Goto System Preferences / Sharing

2.a) Select File Sharing

3) telnet localhost 445

.. connected .. press space and enter to close connection

4) open smb://localhost

THIS FAILS

I hereby prove that macOS Big Sur does not handle SMB

I've used Macs here for years and have made things work, but yesterday, mid-day, I tried to connect to our server and got the message "URLs with the type "smb:" are not supported". I hadn't changed anything, and the server had worked in the morning, and continues to work for my Windows colleagues. My understanding of these things is limited, so forgive me if there's an obvious solution I'm missing here. I initially connected to the server by typing in the URL—when I try to look for servers on the network nothing comes up (and never did), but I may be doing this wrong. Anybody have any suggestions? This is the main place my team keeps files so just living with it is not really an option. If I can't figure anything out in the next couple days I'm literally just going to order a Windows computer because I really can't live without access to this (right now people are moving things to me on USB sticks but I'll need overseas access soon).

smb server disconnect when copying files Hi, I have begun to experience an issue after the latest update to Big Sur 11.3.1 where my mac disconnects from my work server when copying files or when opening/saving in different programs. On occasion, the connections last long enough to copy over files or to save what I am working on but more often than not the mac just disconnects from the server. Initially, it connects with CMD+K but then I will get the spinning beachball and the finder will close or it will stay open only to close once I start copying files. I am connected over VPN and have selected use SMB in file sharing but the issue persists and is getting worse. I still haven't found a fix to this and I would appreciate it if anyone has had a similar problem and has been able to resolve it. Thanks.

smb broken after 11.1 upgrade I just installed Mac OS 11.1 upgrade [upgraded from 11.01]. Now when I try to connect to an SMB share from Finder, the Connecting message just runs forever and never connects. The server hosting the share is fine, I can ping and ssh to it from my Mac no problem. I've been connecting to this SMB share from my Mac for many years without any problem before installing this upgrade. I tried rebooting, same behavior. I tried substituting CIFS for SMB in the server string, same behavior.
