iPhone 13 Pro Disgusting Photos

Whenever I take pictures on my new phone, the photos always processes itself in photos after taking it and creates this ugly over-exposed and over-sharpened image. It looks so bad. Not to mention pictures in low light without night mode on is horrible. I am coming from an iPhone XR and it took way better photos. The photos on it looked natural and in low light they were noisy but on the iPhone 13 Pro, the low light pictures are not only noisy but extra blurry and brightened. I can’t even take a nice dark/slightly in the shade picture without my phone automatically brightening it up. Please fix this. When I take a picture with the phone close to my face, my whole face also turns orange. I have tested out every setting in Photos and Cameras and checked every camera article. I have even talked to Apple support about it and they know nothing. How is no one talking about this. It literally only doesn’t happen usually when you are in a really well lit room but when are we ever. Please help me fix this!! I really love this phone because of the screen and battery life compared to my old one but the camera is not it when it is supposed to be this phone’s selling point. I only have 7 days before I can’t return this phone anymore.

If you do some Internet searches you will see there have been several articles noting that especially for phone cameras, the largest group of customers is not interested in capturing the precise details of an image so much as what they think the image should look like, or basically they want a one button Instagram-filtered image without having to apply a filter.

This is what computational photography is bringing - photos that depict how most users want a photo to look rather than what has actually been captured.

Apple, Samsung, Google and others are all doing this, and Huawei was accused of using pre-saved images of the moon in its "moon mode" photos (they denied doing so.)

This has worried some historians as photos no longer can be counted on to in any way represent what anything actually once looked like; paint colors were never as vivid, architectural details didn't look like that, and now even photos in groups can be edited with a single swipe to remove things you didn't want to be in your photo:

Tom's Guide: Google Pixel 6 Magic Eraser mode is amazing — here’s how it works

The key is, third party apps are able to obtain a true RAW image from the iPhone's sensors and are able to tweak to your specification, the same way anyone with a DSLR or mirrorless that wants the highest quality shoots in RAW mode and has to process those large files offline to create a usable image.

Apple also provides ProRAW files if you choose that have some processing applied but not all the processing seen in photos taken with the Camera app.

Personally I hope someday Apple adds the option to provide completely RAW files that you would need to process offline just like Nikon NEF or Canon CR3 files; for now you will need to use an app like Lightroom Mobile or Manual.

Omg I totally agree with the OP. I am coming from an iPhone X. The photos taken at nighttime with the X were poor, as they were dark and grainy. So, I had very high hopes for the iPhone 13 Pro, but selfies taken at nighttime are *hideous* - they make me look like I’ve got a skin condition! They’re overly bright and make everything look truly awful - just disgusting.

Separate issues with 13 Pro - the lower volume button does not work/is completely unresponsive, so I am taking it to an Apple Store tomorrow to have it looked at.

The above issues, coupled with the fact that Apple have removed the volume controls in Apple Maps (you can no longer adjust the voice navigation volume) have really made me disappointed with my purchase. I’ve been a loyal iPhone user since the 4S, but now I’m seriously considering switching to Samsung. I have never been so disappointed with an Apple product (oh wait - AirPods v1 and their extremely poor battery life!).

I get amazing shots that I am completely thrilled with with the Apple Camera app.

If the Lightroom app works for you, that's great.

Most of the time for emailed/social media posts I take the photo, hit "Edit" then tap the magic wand to pump up parameters a bit more. I wish I could tell the Camera to always apply the magic want to save myself a step - the same way I always apply Auto Fix as a starting point in Lightroom for Mac to see if I like it.

For serious photos I shoot everything in ProRAW and edit it in Lightroom on a Mac.

Do whatever works for you.

You say the stock camera is garbage, yet it's what you're using in Lightroom on the phone; you have an issue with the Camera app, and you can leave feedback about it here:

Feedback - Camera - Apple

Complaints made here will go unaddressed by Apple as they don't read comments here but do at the feedback address above.

The two photos you posted are also not of the same scene at the same time as the rotation of the fence is different for one thing as is the composition of the two.

I thought I was unlucky. Waited for a new compact camera this year then the pixel 6 pro came and it's too big so got an iPhone 13 pro but compared to even my pixel 5 the photos are not detailed and the contrast is way too high. The dark areas lose detail and the sky gets blown on sometimes.

Video seems good though but given the hype around the camera updates my expectations were higher. It's going back and I'll stick with the pixel 5 for now.

The iPhone 13 pro camera is SO BAD!!! I’m beyond frustrated. I turned on and off every single settings mode and nothing is helping. If a photo is even SLIGHTLY dark my phone edits it and it becomes SO overexposed and the images are disgustingly sharp. It’s so frustrating. I spent so much on this and got it for the camera. I’ve ready many different reviews about people having the same problem.

Omg it’s so good to read it’s not just me ! I have had my iPhone 13 pro max one day and want to throw it away ! The camera is horrendous ! How can apple allow this ! After spending find so much money on this stupid phone only to have the worse photos ever ! My iPhone 11 is definitely superior when it comes to the camera ! The photos were always crystal clear ! Even my IPhone 8 was better then this ! And now it’s like we have some kind of stupid android from 2010 ! What a disappointment! I want to sell it or take it back ! Shame on you Apple for allowing this and not fixing it already !

Just got iPhone 13 Pro Max this week and have been trying to figure out what the issue is too. It’ll look fine in the live viewfinder and as soon as I shoot it and it does the processing the whole picture is over exposed, terribly sharpened but at the same time skin tones are over-softened. I’ve practically turned off every special camera feature they marketed for this phone and still not getting the same quality images I’m getting from my 5 year old iPhone X. Disappointed; I hope they can fix this bug. Absolutely wild.

It’s not about “not liking” or a preferential judgement. The picture quality by anyone’s standards is absolutely below par for a 1K phone.

To be honest why should we as customers be chasing up these highly noticeable photo issues with Apple when we get ignored. These disgusting pictures from their AI, regardless of front and back camera should have been noticed in their field testing stage. They already ignored complaints from customers in the Apple store, trying to hide the problem by giving them replacement devices.

That's simply not true.

Multiple photo sites and blogs have praised the iPhone 13's cameras, and millions have no issues with the processing Apple does.

That doesn't discount your thoughts on them, but your assessment is not universal; for example, here are the current results from independent review site DXOMARK:

(Huawei is not allowed to sell their devices in the US.)

But of course, you don't understand that there is a real problem or you do it on purpose? We are several thousands to be affected by this problem. Once I've taken the picture, there is a delay and the picture is transformed, the colors are not right anymore

You can see that there is a real problem, I'm not crazy

Very disappointed with Apple, it's unacceptable, even my iPhone 7 has a better color rendering but if we listen to you it's just us

Jan 4, 2022 5:30 PM in response to YennaC

It points out, as I've said, just because you are unhappy doesn't mean everyone is. I've said innumerable times this does not minimize the opinion of anyone that feels the quality is poor.

Again, there's absolutely zero anyone here can do about it, and complaining here accomplishes precisely nothing as well as Apple Engineering does not read these forums.

If you don't like it, complain here; comments posted at the links below are read by Apple Engineering and if enough people complain, changes may be made in a future software release or future phone:
