iPhone 13 Pro Disgusting Photos

Whenever I take pictures on my new phone, the photos always processes itself in photos after taking it and creates this ugly over-exposed and over-sharpened image. It looks so bad. Not to mention pictures in low light without night mode on is horrible. I am coming from an iPhone XR and it took way better photos. The photos on it looked natural and in low light they were noisy but on the iPhone 13 Pro, the low light pictures are not only noisy but extra blurry and brightened. I can’t even take a nice dark/slightly in the shade picture without my phone automatically brightening it up. Please fix this. When I take a picture with the phone close to my face, my whole face also turns orange. I have tested out every setting in Photos and Cameras and checked every camera article. I have even talked to Apple support about it and they know nothing. How is no one talking about this. It literally only doesn’t happen usually when you are in a really well lit room but when are we ever. Please help me fix this!! I really love this phone because of the screen and battery life compared to my old one but the camera is not it when it is supposed to be this phone’s selling point. I only have 7 days before I can’t return this phone anymore.

If you do some Internet searches you will see there have been several articles noting that especially for phone cameras, the largest group of customers is not interested in capturing the precise details of an image so much as what they think the image should look like, or basically they want a one button Instagram-filtered image without having to apply a filter.

This is what computational photography is bringing - photos that depict how most users want a photo to look rather than what has actually been captured.

Apple, Samsung, Google and others are all doing this, and Huawei was accused of using pre-saved images of the moon in its "moon mode" photos (they denied doing so.)

This has worried some historians as photos no longer can be counted on to in any way represent what anything actually once looked like; paint colors were never as vivid, architectural details didn't look like that, and now even photos in groups can be edited with a single swipe to remove things you didn't want to be in your photo:

Tom's Guide: Google Pixel 6 Magic Eraser mode is amazing — here’s how it works

The key is, third party apps are able to obtain a true RAW image from the iPhone's sensors and are able to tweak to your specification, the same way anyone with a DSLR or mirrorless that wants the highest quality shoots in RAW mode and has to process those large files offline to create a usable image.

Apple also provides ProRAW files if you choose that have some processing applied but not all the processing seen in photos taken with the Camera app.

Personally I hope someday Apple adds the option to provide completely RAW files that you would need to process offline just like Nikon NEF or Canon CR3 files; for now you will need to use an app like Lightroom Mobile or Manual.

Very disappointed with Apple, it's unacceptable, even my iPhone 7 has a better color rendering but if we listen to you it's just us

I never said it was "just you," though I prefer the second photo you posted to the first.

Follow the links I posted above to complain to Apple, as neither I nor anyone else here can do anything about this.

We're all just fellow Apple users here on this forum.

I am so happy to hear i am not the only one! I browsed everywhere to see if some article was talking about this, but nothing. Just positive feedbacks.

I hate terribly iphone 13 pro pictures, i see distortion, too much editing (skin turns to orange and they are over exposed - if you try to re-editing it just get worst) and overall the phone is too heavy. I preferred much more my X version and all previous iphone i had.

Do you think i can still change the phone i bought in september and switch to a previous version? Such a pity. I wonder still how is possible that iphone did such a mistake.

I hope this will be fixed next year.

I'm not sure what you're doing to get that cartridge photo with the 13 Pro Max, are you trying to use the wide lens to take a macro photo rather than allow it to switch to the ultra wide?

The wide lens on the 13 Pro Max can't focus much closer than 10mm due in part to the iPhone 13 Pro's larger sensor; the ultra wide lens can focus much closer.

Each lens doesn't have a different color temperature per se, but rather the phone readjusts white balance depending upon the overall scene each lens sees.

I actually have a Hasseblad X1D II medium format digital (https://www.hasselblad.com/x-system/x1d/) camera so I am aware of how a larger sensor affects images, (shallower depth of field and a longer focal length for the same len). this should not stop me from taking a sharp close-up photo of a tiny object if I move back a little more from the object I am photographing. still no answer as to why I (and many others on multiple forums) are complaining about the user experience and quality of iPhone 13 pro photographs.

If you have a Hasselblad you know well what “minimum focus distance” is for a camera and lens combination.

Do you complain to Zeiss or Hasselblad that you can’t focus at a distance under what the minimum focus distance is?

Of course not, and Apple is the same.

You’re complaining the phone can’t do something it was never specified, designed or promised to do, which is why macro mode with the Ultra Wide lens exists.

In the end, it does a great job in most circumstances and is not perfect in all.

If it’s that important to you that it do that precise task in that precise way, sell your iPhone 13 Pro, keep your iPhone 11 Pro and pocket the proceeds.

For the photos I take, the 13 Pro Max can largely replace my DSLR and by comparison the 11 Pro is a point-and-shoot.

Of course it can’t in all situations, which is why high-end cameras still exist.

I'm not saying that's the thinking at Apple, I'm merely pointing out that that is what is expected from "good photos" today, at least as far as photos posted to social media are concerned, which, let's face it, is the main display venue for all phone camera photos.

I don't know what to tell you about being "stuck" aside from iPhones are quite popular, so you should be able to get a lot for it on the used market.

But note also that Google and Samsung are in a race to process their photos in similar ways, so while this may kill your "love affair with Apple," you certainly won't be falling in love with any other phone vendor.

This zoom into a photo showing the "oil painting effect" comes from a Samsung Galaxy S21:

There too the only option is to use a third party app and/or take photos in a form of RAW and process later.

This is really great to hear that you are engaged with the engineers... Thanks to people like you, we might get that software update to turn off this smart HDR or whatever it is called.

At the end of the day, there is a bit contradiction between a product that says "Pro" but doesn't offer fully manual controls. Same with white balance for example.. Why the **** can't we have a button for this?

Jan 15, 2022 4:34 AM in response to Dogcow-Moof

Pro Raw only works for Photos, not video. What's the point of offering the option to film in PRORES if you can't even control White Balance.

And yes, I'm aware there are pro apps out there like Filmic Pro for video, but if Apple sells me a 1300 euros camera, called PRO, I expect Apple to provide me a pro tool without having to use third party apps.

You might find this a detail, but when I use my phone as a camera for example say in street photography situation I want the fastest access to the app, using the "slide to the right" or "Lock Screen button" instant access to the camera app provided by iOS. I find that having to unlock your phone (specially today of you wear a mask and Face ID doesn't work), and launch a third party app (I have ProCam), is too slow and cumbersome. Again, this is my own personal way of using the phone camera. I'm keeping my iPhone13 Pro because of the battery life (and the 77mm lens :) and I still hope that Apple will provide an iOS update fixing those issues.

Of course not, it doesn’t exist.

My point is Night Mode does a lot of processing to make a daylight-like photo possible in Night Mode, so it’s easy to see why in some circumstances you might prefer a night photo taken with the 6S.

Night Mode can generate some truly amazing photos but it’s not perfect, which is why it can also be shut off.

For example this photo of an album cover was taken in light so low it would be uncomfortable reading - thanks to Night Mode.

Thanks, Paul, for the suggestions. I’ll see if the different modes help.

I just got an iPhone 13 Pro, and upon examining my photos, realized that the details were all mush, like I get out of cheap digital cameras. Thing is, my old iPhone 7 Plus wasn’t like this! Photos came out with plenty of detail and not this watercolor look. I had expected the 13 to be an upgrade. What the heck? So that’s why I’m here.

Sticking with my 7 Plus or going Android are less than good options. Ideally, I’d want an option to turn off the heavy noise reduction.

Some of the other suggestions sound useful. I’ll test other modes, like Live, burst, and Portrait, and see how they do. And I’ll try 3rd party apps. It’s a shame to have to resort to that. I’m hoping ProRAW is not affected by this detail-destroying effect, but if not, I’ll try using that more (at the risk of running out of space). (A quick review, and I think RAW looks pretty good. Live view, not so much, but maybe I need to try testing more.)
