Why can't I delete text messages on iPhone

Hi.

I can not delete the entire conversation in a text message with one button in iOS 15.

Previously, I could select the text message > more > delete all and clear in entire conversation but this function is not available on the iOS 15 upgrade.

Is this permanent? Do I need to change a setting, or is there an error in the update?

Thank you.

Hi Klfe143. You can delete all of the texts but you lose the conversation from the list of recent messages in the messaging app. Just open the messages app. and swipe left on the conversation that you want to delete. The other way is to "pin" the contact to the top of the messaging app then press/hold the icon and select delete. That way you can delete the conversation but the contact is pinned to the messaging app at the top so it's easier to start a new message.

Thanks llobsterghost1.

The change is not with deleting individual texts, it is regarding deleting the entire conversation thread.

As it stands now, each message must be selected using the method that you described but previous to this upgrade it was not like that. I individually selected 68 text messages to delete the thread so I was starting from fresh, where as previously I could do that with one action

Press and hold text message > more > delete all does not exist.

"More" does not lead to anything.

Cheers.

No, just the next upgrade in the line.

If you wanted to clear an entire text thread, quickly. How would you do it?

I clear my conversations with my boss every single day because otherwise, when I search my messages for my customers I end up getting the message conversation that I had with my boss mixed up in the search results and it's annoying.

Basically, the delete all function has disappeared.

The other thing that has disappeared to at the top of the text message where the number/contact name is there used to be little circles that had info or call as buttons with about 50% opacity. They've gone too.

Thanks much, AJT001. The information above is very reassuring.

I did pin the contact and then press the icon to show the "delete" button as you described. Hitting the "delete" button then did clear all the conversation with the contact, but it also delete the contact from the list in Messages. To retrieve the same contact, a new message must be sent from the contact and then the nightmare repeats. I found that all conversation and contact are deleted simultaneously regardless the "pin" or "unpin" setting.

Is this what you saw as well, or I there is something that I missed? Thank you again for the information.

That’s right BobTI. The contact conversation does go missing from the list. I guess the idea of pinning the contact made it easy to start the next message again rather than having to go back to the main contacts app on the phone.

One idea is that you can enter the contact name and their phone number into the Notes app. That way you can easily create a list of regular contacts you stay in touch with and you can press/hold their phone number in order to send a message via the Notes app. This means you can delete them off of the messages app and easily send a message to them through the Notes app. And avoid having a bunch of contacts pinned to the top of the messages app. which is possibly not a good thing for you.

With my work, I do a daily list of clients up that have to be messaged, on my desktop PC, in the notes section of iCloud which then shows up on my phone and I do the initial messaging from my phone in the Notes app. I Manage the replies and any ongoing message conversation through the messages app.

So, I’m saying that it’s really easy to make a good phone list in the Notes app. and use that as your contacts list. Then, it doesn’t matter if you delete them off of the messages app. list.

ideally, it’d be great if Apple would just put things back the way that they were but somehow I don’t think that’s going to happen.

I hope this helps you out. Cheers. Andrew.

Thanks much, Andrew. The use of Notes is indeed an effective approach without interfering with the existing list of contact. Thank you for sharing. As the "delete all" function unreasonably disappears in Messages since iOS15, however, technology seems to make our life more complicated and difficult. It should be the other way around, shouldn't it? I pray for the recovery of this POPULAR function in the next update, when we don't need to detour to Notes app to do such a simple routine... Bob
