dnssd.dll not found

Just ran the update to V12.12.1.1. When I try to run iTunes i get error message that code execution cannot proceed because dnssd.dll not found, try reinstalling. I have run Repair, I have Uninstalled and Reinstalled, I have run sfc /scannow. Problem remains.

Hi jcommerce,

I encounter this same issue every few months and the solutions posted in here never worked for me.

However, this always works for me:

  1. Download the Airport Utility Setup here: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1547?locale=en_US
  2. Execute the setup.
  3. If it prompts you to chose between Repair or Uninstall, make sure you select Uninstall.
  4. Re-run the Airport Utility Setup to install it.
  5. Launch iTunes.

The Airport Utility Setup installs and registers the missing DLL in 32-bit and 64-bit, this is what always gets my iTunes running again. The iTunes setup itself for some reason does not bring the DLLs it needs, which the Community Specialists in here don't seem to know.

Thank you, Brian. I followed the steps on the “Remove and reinstall iTunes and

related software components” page. I was able to uninstall iTunes, Apple Software

Update, the most recent Apple Mobile Device Support, the Apple Application

Support 32-bit, and the Apple Application Support 64-bit. But my attempts to

uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support 2017 failed. My attempt to Uninstall Bonjour

failed “because it is intended for 32-bit versions of Windows. Please obtain

the 64-bit installer from (an apple URL).” But when I went to the URL it gave, the page

no longer existed. I then went through the steps to remove any of the folders mentioned

that were in the Program Files and its Common Folder, as well as in the Program

Files (x86) and its Common Folder. I emptied the Recycle Bin, restarted my

computer, downloaded the latest version of iTunes from the Microsoft Store, and

installed it. When I ran iTunes I received a message that “your previous iTunes

must be removed. Would you like to remove it?” I clicked “Yes,” and it said “iTunes

could not remove your previous installation. Remove it using the Programs and

Features control panel.” I opened the Panel and again tried to remove Apple Mobile

Device Support 2017 and Bonjour, but again no luck.

Thank you for your response. I resolved the problem by purchasing iMyFone iTunes Fix (Windows version), 1-Year Plan, for $14.95 USD. It was able to remove the 2017 Apple Support Services program and the old Bonjour program, which seemed to be the cause of my problem. Since applying the fix, which worked, a new version of iTunes was released, I was able to upgrade without incident, so the fix appears to have permanently resolved the problem. If it does reoccur, I will try your recommendation.

Greetings, jcommerce.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. We can understand why you’d want to resolve the issue with being unable to update iTunes due to the "dnssd.dll not found” error.

Start by working through these steps: If you can't install or update iTunes for Windows

If the issue continues, check out:Resolve issues between iTunes and third-party security software

We hope this helps! Thanks for being a part of the community.

Sincerely.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator. It may also help to temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment. Links to the most recent builds are now at the bottom of the page.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
