Changing "Avoid Highways" through the Carplay App

So far it looks like the only way to toggle this setting is manually through the maps app on the phone and not via Carplay. Google maps has the option to toggle this on and off while in route, which is very handy. With Apple Maps, the only way I have found to do this is to end the route, open up the app on the phone, and toggle the avoid highways option then get directions again. This is extremely frustrating and dangerous to do while driving. Anyone know if there is a way around this?
