Apple Maps Defaults to Transit Directions on iPhone

Solution for me: It was the Transit overlay. If you have the transit overlay on (top right of the map) it overrides the selection to be Transit directions. Switch the map/overlay back to driving there.

I looked at transit for subway info and must have forgot to change it back there.

I had the same problem and selected driving as my preferred method in my settings but didn’t see any change from transit once I went to maps. Then I noticed in the upper section of the map I still had the icon of the transit bus showing. Once I clicked on that I was given the option to choose my preferred method to driving and it stuck.

Make sure the little button at the top right corner of the screen is a picture of a car and not the transit when on Maps app. If it is then click it and change it from transit to driving. UPDATE Oopsie, I’m an idiot. Somebody already replied to this. Who knows how to delete this **** cause I feel dumb LMAO.

finally fixed it!

upper right corner, you’re likely viewing the transit map! Change to driving map, or satellite, whatever else you like. But NOT transit map.

The only thing that’s worked for me is deleting and reinstalling the app. Unfortunately it still happened again about a week later. I deleted and reinstalled again, and now it’s been fine for a few days again. Not an ideal solution but it works.

This drove me crazy but i figured it out. Go to settings and change default to DRIVING not TRANSIT.

Then delete the app and all it's data before re-installing and boom it's fixed

Try this, before making changes in settings make sure Maps is closed (not just minimized ) then got to settings and change to drive as your preferred setting. Once you relaunch Maps it should now default to driving.

I had this problem and setting my preferred to driving didnt help - but switching off all the options for transit in settings seemed to work when I relaunched maps

So of all the things, removing the transit options and then setting it to drive finally worked.

I'm having the same issue but the Apple Maps fairy hasn't visited my Mac Studio.

It's a small thing but it's annoying that I have to constantly change from transit to driving. I've also seen other threads making the same complaint and there doesn't appear to be a fix.

Fingers crossed it'll get resolved when Ventura comes out sometime this month.

This is so annoying. On my iPhone 12…It defaults to transit for me no matter what my settings say. Some locations farther away it will default to driving but if it’s under 10 miles away it seems like no matter what it is always on transit. I really wish someone would fix this or tell us what the fix is. It’s one of those bugs that are just plain annoying.

Beat solution:

go to Settings/Maps in iPhone

then select preferred mode of transportation to ‘driving’

this is the only way to permanently set the mode in the app

you can still change the mode in the app for each travel event, but at least the default is consistent

I have the same issue. New Mac Book Air M2. I tried all of the ideas above to no avail. Apple you have a problem and it's not the only one I'm having with my New Mac.
