Verizon now requires we include the area code on all calls

I got a message from Verizon, my cellular provider, that starting on 10/24/21, I must include the area code on all calls I make, including local calls. I don’t know why Verizon can’t make it easier and simply assume that if I’m making a call and I don’t include the area code, I’m trying to dial locally, but that’s on Verizon, not Apple. My question is, how does this work with the Apple address book? Do I have to go in and add an area code on all local entries in the address book or is there some setting that can automate this?

Yes, you have to add the area code to all local entries. This has been required almost country-wide with all carriers, both cellular and landline, for the past 10 years. There were only a few areas that did not require it, mostly rural exchanges served by partner carriers.
