If you have Office 2011 for Mac or before WILL NOT run, For Catalina Office 2016 for Mac needs to be v15.35 or later.

Update the software : https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-office-for-mac

Big Sur compatibility—Microsoft recently announced that it was officially ending support for Office 2016 for Mac on October 13, 2020. Apple Silicon compatibility in Office 2016 is questionable. Office 2019 no issues.

The current Office for Mac; Office 365 or Office 2019 (One-time purchase) are OK with Catalina/Big Sur

To activate a Microsoft Office 365 subscription you simply enter the email address you used when you extended the subscription with Microsoft.

If you have Office 365, then you should be able to use a web browser to access the online Microsoft site to edit your office documents.

It is never a good idea to upgrade to a new version of macOS until you have confirmed that all of your third party apps are compatible with the new OS. It can sometimes take developers a couple of months to work out all the bugs associated wtih a new OS.

You can also perform a clean install of macOS of Big Sur (or whatever version of macOS you were using prior to upgrading to Monterey). A clean install involves erasing the drive before reinstalling macOS after which you can restore from a backup you hopefully made before upgrading to Monterey. You do need to make sure to copy any new or modified files since the upgrade to Monterey since you won't be able to migrate anything from your Monterey backup to an older OS. If you do not have a backup made before upgrading to Monterey, then you will need to manually transfer your important files and settings to an external drive while you perform a clean install of macOS.
