I placed an online order for an iPhone Mini which is scheduled for delivery in a couple of weeks. I am leery of shipping my trade in iPhone XR and would prefer turning it in at my local Apple Store. Will the local store accept my trade in and credit the trade in amount to my original form of payment?

Usually not but you can always call and ask. If they won't just before you put your iPhone in the trade-in box take copious photos of the iPhone from all angles and take a video of the iPhone actually working, i.e. showing the Hello screen in various languages.
