Photos app show original and edited when importing

When using Photos to import photos from my iPhone (under devices) via USB, I see two files for each photo - the original and edited (if edited on phone). If I've edited the file, I don't want to import the original. The only way to do that is to click on each file to import, meaning I can't click-drag to select multiple photos. Also sometimes the edits can be subtle. I find the originals are always the left of the two. But it still means I have to click each photo to import.

And to make it even more frustrating, the originals are still on the device even clicking Delete Items after Import. Therefore I then import the originals into a 'delete' folder.

Has anyone else encountered such a bizarre workflow?

Firstly, thanks for your thoughts about this. Appreciate the input.

So I've updated to 11.6 (11.6.1 not available). To answer your question I have the setting to High Efficiency.

So here are some interesting findings. First, 11.6 hasn't done anything. The 'feature' persists ie. the original and edited photos appear as two separate files to upload.

However, I just found that this happens when, as part of my editing, I switch off the Live feature. If I edit (on phone) the photo, but leave the Live Photo feature, only one image is available to import.

It is a strange behaviour and I'll raise it as an issue, but I can live with importing the image as a Live Photo and then batch 'turn off' once in Photos (Mac).

Thanks for the reply. I'm using the stock Photos iOS app to do my edits. I understand non-destructive editing. But once I finished editing I want to only export the final image. I don't see how I can filter out originals (but only if they're edited as I will have unedited pictures too).

I can select photos I want to export, which is laborious as I need to spot the detail in Info box.

I could use Showing filter 'Edited', but again, some photos will not have been edited.

If I download the edited photos only, the originals still appear to download when select 'my device'. They don't move to the duplicates section up top.

I can download all photos, but I would have to go back and delete duplicates, with no simple way of doing it.

I hope I I've explained the scenario adequately.

iOS 15.0.2

Mac OS 11.5.2

Photos 6.0

Following your example, when I connect my phone via USB to my Mac, and in Photos I select the device to view the pictures to import, I would see 3 pictures. The unedited one, the original photo and the edited one.

To be sure I just replicated your case. I had a new picture on my phone. I connected the to the Mac and saw just the one picture to import. I disconnected the phone, edited the photo (in Photos iOS), reconnected the phone and see two images to import - original and edited.

This is manageable if it is just a few photos, but if I have a holiday-worth of edited photos, then it is quite a pain to import them all, and either put up with seeing two versions of the images or going back and selecting the version I want to keep.

I'm not being condescending. I'm simply pointing out that you're using an app that is designed to maintain the originals but you don't want that. Ergo: you're using the wrong app, and that's what's causing your workflow issues. Solution: use an app that doesn't do that and, instead, works the way you prefer. You can write a novel in a spreadsheet programme, but there will always be issues with layout. Solution: use a word processor.

I would say it is a fault in the import of Photos, especially that I'm using entirely stock Apple apps. If the intention is to maintain the original, then why would it not import the single photo, but maintain the original. For example, if I imported a photo, edited via Photo app, then the single photo would be visible rather than two. It is only when importing does Photos (Mac) see two unique files.

My use case doesn't seem particularly unique. I take a photo on my iPhone, using its regular camera app. I use a filter or crop it in iOS Photos. I then import it to Mac Photos, to save phone space, put into an album, and to back up.

I simple ask if there is a workflow people have found that negates having to choose individual photos to import.

The problem is, that the edits are stored in the data base. Transferring images via USB can't transfer the edits in the database, so the only way the app can keep both the original file, and still give you the edits is to transfer both images.

If you want to transfer just one image, then syncing via iCloud will give you that, and will tranfer the edits into the mac photos app database. But you won't be able to remove the photo from the phone (you will be able to use optimise phone storage though)

Let's get a little more information

What version of iOS are you running on your iPhone?

What version of MacOS are you running on your Mac?

So to be clear let's say for example you have only 2 pictures on your iPhone in the Recents Album. You then edit one picture in the iPhone Photos app.

You then connect your iPhone to the mac and then open Photos on the Mac and you then click on the iPhone listed in the left hand panel.

What do you see? Do you see 2 pictures to import or 3 pictures to import?

You should only see 2 pictures, the edited version of the picture you modified on your iPhone and the 2nd picture which you didn't change

And to make it even more frustrating, the originals are still on the device even clicking Delete Items after Import. Therefore I then import the originals into a 'delete' folder.

Have the originals by any chance been synced to the iPhone from your Mac? Synced photos cannot be deleted directly during the Import from the iPhone. Or is My Photo Stream enabled? The photos from My Photo Stream may be showing in the Import dialog, but cannot be deleted by "Delete after Import" either.
