safari tabs in update IOS 15.0.2

I've just update my iPhone to IOS 15.0.2 and the regret is big. They've changed the Safari layout and I hate it. Unfortunately its seems it can not be changed. I see now the tabs on one screen, small sizes, yuk. Before this, they were placed in a kind of row en you could scroll trough them and with the + button a new tab could be added. Any one an idea how to change this back? (without undo the update)

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone
  2. Choose Safari from the root list
  3. Choose between tabs on top or bottom underneath the Tabs heading
  • Tab Bar: The new default, repositions the address bar to the bottom
  • Single Tab: Choose this to get the old Safari interface back

Choose the Single Tab option if you’ve become accustomed to the previous Safari design. And boom, just like that you have your old Safari interface back!

It looks like most people find their way to this thread looking for advice on how to switch back to the old format either because it is their preference or it is a visual need. It seems clear that there is currently no option to revert back. I suggest that anyone else who joins this thread and would like a revert option that you please write to Apple feedback and let them know you would like that option. I also suggest that you skip reading any and all posts by Lawrence Finch who appears to be angry at those of us having trouble with this update and is offering nothing but odd attacks if anyone disagrees with him. Thanks to all who have tried to be constructive. I suggest no one respond to Finch anymore. Do not feed the troll. These forums are meant to offer support.

Hello mvbrand1,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We understand that you'd like to know how to customize or manage the current Safari layout after updating your iPhone. We'd be happy to provide some information on this.

Take a look at Customize your Safari settings on iPhone, specifically the section"Change your Safari layout." You can change between a Compact Tab Bar or Separate Tab Bar layout.

Have a nice day.

You seem to be in the minority, but perhaps Apple can provide setting options so you can have it your way and the rest of us can be happy, too. ;)

Well, I’m probably in the majority, as anyone who either likes the new layout or is indifferent is unlikely to visit ASC to say so. It’s only users who really hate it who are going to take the time to post about it. Which I understand and respect. But just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean that it is a bad design or that the rest of the world agrees with you.

You should let Apple know your opinion here→https://apple.com/feedback; this is much more effective than complaining in ASC, where only other users will see your posts, and only those who don’t like the new design will bother to read the posts in this thread. If Apple gets a substantial amount of feedback they may change it in a future release. There are other cases on record where negative feedback really did result in changes, such as the editing tool magnifying glass (which is back after being removed in iOS 13/14).

You’re absolutely right. I’m not a fan. My eyesight is very bad and motor skills are less than exemplary so this update is hard for me to maneuver. Have a fantastic new year!

Since you mentioned motor skills, I had a terrible time with the old format; I was always tapping the wrong tab to open it or closing the wrong tab in trying to hit the correct “x" because they were so close together. With my aging motor skills I find the new format a huge improvement; I always select the correct tab. While I don’t have a vision problem, iOS provides several features for those with limited vision. I’ve tried them with the new format and both Zoom and Voiceover make it easy to see and select the right tab, better than the old format because with either you can see or hear the whole page, not just the headline.

This 'solution' does not work. What an awful update change - whoever thought it up should be ashamed of themselves. Not user friendly and as someone who has had an iPhone since 2008 (iPad and iMac too) I am now on verge of dumping Apple, my XR soon to be replaced. Even worse, the show tab overview button has disappeared from all my devices and I can't seem to get it. back. Used to regularly picking up open tabs and switching between devices, I can't do that now (I have Safari and handoff ticked). Please think again

I agree. I installed a finish the update very early this morning. I don’t like the new layout either. I prefer the previous format. Possibly if I had known I may have delayed the update until after holiday time. I mentioned it to my 30 yr old son who thought it was a silly complaint. But it’s really not in the big pic. Why can’t wait to maintain a more familiar easily seen & managed format? I’ll check back and see if a solution but like you mention, possibly not
