Cursor jumps to end of field

When filling out information in some text fields - for example the name entry fields on ancestry.com - if I need to add or change something in the middle of the field, I move the cursor to the position needed to add or change what I need to. Then, after typing one letter, the cursor jumps to end of the field. It wasn’t doing this until this last week, and it’s truly obnoxious. I guess my question is, is this a setting that I can turn off? It isn’t happening in this field I am typing in currently. I have attached the following image as an example of what it is doing. I typed Joseph “Jumping Joe” and then realized I needed to add Anthony after Joseph and before “Jumping Joe” and this is what happened. Only the “A” was inserted before the cursor jumped to the end of the field.

I have this problem too, on iPhone, except that it can occur anywhere I type. Could be Notes app, could be while composing an email. In my case, it is not to end of text field, it will jump to an earlier paragraph, or sometimes from the body of email to the subject or address field. It jumps to the middle of an earlier sentence or word, never to the end of a field. Please note: this is while composing a sentence, not inserting the cursor to another sentence. Had anyone else ever experienced this? No one at Apple seemed familiar with this at all. I will look for some of my screen shots on this and post later.

As others have pointed out, the recommended answer has nothing to do with the question. The actual issue (in my case, which I believe is the same as the original question) is that when editing a text field in a form in a web browser (happens in both Chrome and Safari in MacOS), the cursor suddenly jumps to the end of the text field. This does not seem to be related to the track pad, and only happens for me in a browser, not in any other editor (Notes, Xcode, Word, etc). It has also not happened if I first select at least a single character prior to typing, (but a pretty cumbersome way to edit).

  • MacBook Air (M1, 2020, OS: 12.2) issue occurs in both Chrome and Safari.
  • Apparently occurs on iOS as well
  • Not limited to a particular website

Turn the onscreen keyboard into a trackpad

  1. Touch and hold the Space bar with one finger until the keyboard turns light gray.
  2. Move the insertion point by dragging around the keyboard.
  3. To select text, touch and hold the keyboard with a second finger, then adjust the selection by moving the first finger around the keyboard.

See Select, cut, copy, and paste text for more ways to select text.

Here is my solution. I use Chrome. It is too big of an irritation.

This is a no brainer to fix. We can envision the code in our head. Every character is read and the input field is updated and the cursor is place at the end of the text. All that needs to be done is record the position of the cursor and restore that once you update the text in the input field. If Safari was open source it would have been solved in 24 hours.

This happens to me on my iPad and not iPhone. But the suggested answer to the problem didn't actually address the problem. I suspect the reason there isn't a real solution is that this is not a wide spread problem. I suspect a full reset would clear this. Just have to decide if I want to go to that trouble.

Oh and in my case this odd behavior happens in every text box, not just chrome or Safari. So seems a global bug in the operating system.

Well, turning off the search suggestions seems to have worked as a work around only fix for me. Means my problem came in after they made changes to Bing as it used to not play the cursor to the end after the first inserted letter of a word. Wish they would now fix it but will leave search suggestions in Bing turned off till they do. That was beyond annoying.
