iMessage Pictures from Prior Conversations Not Loading

I have ALL my text and iMessages going back to the first iPhone, so the file is large, but I am currently experiencing issues where it will not load picture sent in previous conversations and instead jus shows a "tap to download" option, which when clicked doesn't load the picture, and eventually just shows a thumbnail with a question mark.

How do I get these to load either on my iPhone, iPad or iMac even, none of them will load the pictures.

Hello cwrobertson.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities and for sharing these details. It sounds like you're unable to view pictures that have been shared with you via iMessage. Specifically, they don't load and just show a questions mark. We can understand how this would be an issue. Allow us to investigate this issue and assist in any way we can.

Currently, how much available storage do you have on your iPhone? You can find out by going to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If you force close the Messages app and restart your device do you notice any change in this behavior?

If that doesn't help, try connecting to a different reliable Wi-Fi network to see if it helps with loading those specific pictures. If you're using Low Power Mode, temporarily disable that feature as well:

Additionally, if you have any pending updates available for your device, it might be best to install them. Keeping your device fully updated can help resolve various issues. Just in case, the resources below can guide you through the update process:

We hope this information is useful. Cheers.

I have tried all these things and none of them work. I tried calling Apple as well and they didn't seem to have any solutions, however, I see these comments on various sites, so I know the issue is not isolated to just me.

Essentially the pictures will not load on any of my devices (iPad, iPhone, iMac, or MacBook) and it will initially show a "tap to download" button which after hitting and it acting like it is downloading, simply will not download and ultimately becomes a thumbnail with a ?.

I have all my messages going back since I first got an iPhone, so its a large database of messages, but I have always backed it up, initially on my computer, then once upload to cloud was available, I did that as well, and then once iMessage backup was enabled, I let it back up to that, and the size of the file is representative of this.

As for space on my iPhone, I have the latest iPhone 12 Pro, and have PLENTY of space, so that shouldn't be an issue at all.

Any idea how to get it to start loading pictures again? I hate to suggest it, but does signing out of iCloud on my iPad, iPhone, MacBook, and iMac, such that iMessages is not enabled on any of those devices, and then enabling them one at a time again, have any logic at all? Seems like a lot of hassle (with having turn off find my phone, etc. etc. etc.) but I figured I would ask. Just seems like an Apple issue that isn't being addressed.
