Trackpad Multitouch Issues With M1 MacBook Air

Hello,

I've been having issues with my new M1 MacBook Air. Multitouch gestures (specifically pinch to zoom) are bugging out when I try to pull them off. The gesture will work halfway through before cutting out, and moving the mouse cursor instead. I've already tried restarting, creating a new user, booting into safe mode, and running the Apple diagnostic tests, but none of these seemed to of worked. If there's anything else I can do, please help me out.

Thank you.

Got the same issues on M1 Pro 14" sometimes (pinch zooming does not respond or the "slide to change app/desktop" feature does not work - the gesture with 3 or 4 fingers from left to right). If that happens, the multi view (F3-Key) does not respond either.

Workaround is to go to terminal and type in:

killall Dock

This restarts everything (takes under one second) and all is back to normal. Therefore I'm 100% confident that its a software and not a hardware issue.

Hope this helps someone here or the development team to find the bug.

I have the same problem with a M1 Macbook Air, my OS is 12.1

I went to the apple store, they tested it with me, saw the problem and agreed with me. I left it overnight and after extensive testing told me they didn't detect any real problem with the trackpad. They offered to keep for a week to change the trackpad, but unfortunately I couldn't afford to do it that because of work.

I hope it is software related, because doing a lot of graphical work I can't keep a computer with that behavior for very long.

Of course it is a software problem, I am a software engineer and I am 100% sure, just a crappy coding, believe me. Hope they are able to debug it and fix it. It never happened before Monterey 12.1 update. Because Apple products are so expensive they never have an issue with replacing hardware components thus keeping customers kinda happy, but most of the time the real solution is fixing bugs. I am fed up with all this steps they recommend to try and resolve the problem. Restart, safe mode blah blah. Almost never works.

So after the latest updates from Adobe CC and Sketch - apps that I mostly use, trackpad issues have been less noticeable BUT still happening. It happens using Photos and Safari has glitches that are quite related to trackpad as well, for example, I open a tab and when I go browse it goes back or close by trying to scroll, super weird. Anyway, I don’t believe it’s performance or hardware only…There’s no excuse for a MBP M1 Max to lag performance! Last Mac OS update did not address anything regarding trackpad issues but it did improved Safari… I won’t be surprised if at some point Apple launches a recall program for these Trackpads… being this an issue affecting the entire generation of M1s, I think this must be addressed as soon as possible.

Hello BlazerWerewolf3,

It sounds like you are experiencing issues using gestures on your Mac. We understand how important this is to you and we are here to help.

You have done some great troubleshooting steps so far. You mentioned that you booted into safe mode and created a new user. Did the same behavior occur when trying those steps?

If the issue persists, can you provide a few more details? When did you first notice this? Which macOS version are you currently using? Also, do you only experience this when using certain apps? If not, does it occur when performing a specific gesture? To test different gestures, check out: Use Multi-Touch gestures on your Mac - Apple Support

Cheers!
