Emails sometimes don't send and I see "Sending Message"

Over the past 6 months, I've had times when emails would not send and I discover that "Sending Message" or "Sending Messages" followed by a size - right now it's 516k, but it can be hundreds of Mb's. I've called support in the past and they've walked me through a process that ended up clearing this up and emails started flowing again. But, I've never been able to remember exactly what they did - had me do. I'm now "out of" support time and hoping someone in an Apple Community can help.

This problem was not "solved" yet. Don't know what I did to select that misnomer. Problem is still there. I need two answers:

  1. How can I "free-up" the outgoing message(s) that have created this problem?
  2. What can I do to cease this problem from happening over and over? I'm providing a screen-shot for clarification. This has been happening occasionally over the past year and much more frequently over the past 6 months. At the bottom of the leftmost side of the screen, at the bottom below or so, stop the "Sending Message" alert that appears at the bottom of the Apple email client ("mailboxes") list/window, and remains for hours or days. Here's a screenshot of what I'm seeing now. .

If I create another Email and send it, the size of what's "Sending" increases and nothing goes out after that. I can't afford being unable to to send emails. Thanks for any help you might be able to offer.

The problem is now officially "Solved" - The ISP (small private company) changed their incoming and OUTGOING Server IDs, without informing me! This was discovered by the Apple Support person (the most friendly, yet knowledgable and efficient, Apple Support person I've ever had the pleasure of working with! I wish I had called Apple Support directly. a week ago when the problem had returned.
