mp4 files do NOT work on my iphone!

all the help files say iPhones support mp4.

first lets split mp4 files into those videos you take on your phone, and other mp4 files - like the ones exported from a host of different applications.

ok, the first category work.

The second category are mp4 files but they do NOT work on my iPhone 8 or on my iPhone 13 pro. Both use the latest OS.

and when you sync a file from my Mac to the iPhone, i get the message "“FA75BB17-83B6-4901-9752-A300E41AEF90.mp4” was not copied to the iPhone “Phoebe” because it cannot be played on this iPhone."

the file name quoted in the message is not the filename(?), but its definitely the same file.

the files were made on my mac, they work in Quicktime player, they work in Photos, but they will not sync to my phone

ive had this problem for over 12 months. But it used to work!!!

.mp4 is just a wrapper -- what does Invisor or MediaInfo say about the movie and audio codecs inside it??

A few years ago I converted all then-incompatible old movies with obsolete codecs to H.264/H.265 AAC .mp4 and they synced OK just a few months ago. But lately I have been getting those non-helpful alerts when syncing to a newish iPad Pro. But alerts like "FA75BB17-83B6-4901-9752-A300E41AEF90.mp4 is not compatible" is not very helpful when trying to isolate the problem (new Photos libraries now hide the real filename and reveal it only when the file is exported out).

Just to clarify, this cannot be a problem with the files! I'm not going to spend money on Invisor or MediaInfo to check files that worked in Photos, but now, don't work.

Apple changed something.

I have dozens, maybe hundreds of animation files, made over the last five years, all mp4 files, and they are dotted around in various Photos albums. Those albums are both a record of past projects, and also part of my c.v. or proposal documents that i use to show potential clients... except that now none of the videos will even import. Its not that they don't work, they do, on my mac, but Photos will not even try to sync them, and just to make things more annoying, won't even tell you the name of the file that it now refuses to sync.

Frustrating and infuriating!

Especially when you search for help and all you get is support pages telling you the file types that Photos will support, except it won't.

Tried to post an example file here, but Apple's website won't accept it either!!!!

It was made using a program called SketchUp, sometime in 2019.. maybe 2018. And it was synced to my phone and iPad for over a year, before the syncing of files from iTunes/ Music started saying that the file (which hasn't changed) is now incompatible. I tried it again just now.. it still won't sync to my phone, and now doesn't even give a warning message. It simply doesn't appear on the phone. (my mac says the album has 28 photos and i video. My phone says 28 photos!)

(it worked on my iPhone 8, then stopped working, and has never worked own my iPhone 13 pro. I tend to keep the OS completely up to date, as it is now, on my iPad, iPhone and Mac).
