Slow sending email on Mail

Apple Mail is very very slow to send emails. Have tried using webmail for similar sized email and webmail is quite quick. On Apple Mail emails can be stuck in the outbox for days and the after logging back on they go through. Have attempted to change the DNS settings, but when I log off and log on they go back to the original settings.

This morning I got this from Optus

Your mailbox has exceeded 90% of its quota. When it reaches 100%, new

messages will be rejected and bounce back to the sender. To avoid missing

mail, please keep your mailbox at a reasonable size.

Refer to http://www.optusnet.com.au/help/dial/faqs/email#storage_policy

for further details.

I checked the Optus webmail and sure enough it was at 498 MB with a 500 MB limit, I have deleted a lot of old emails and changed the setting on my email account so that it deletes emails from the webmail as soon as I move them to another folder.

I think this is the issue.

I have checked by send emails from the Optus account to the Optus account that were 19.8 MB in size and they went through very quickly.

Thanks for your help much appreciated.

Hello mataware,

We're glad you thought to ask Apple Support Communities about the issue you're having with the Mail app sending emails slowly. It's good to know it's working as expected when using webmail. Does the same behavior happen while in safe mode? Here's more information about safe mode, how to start there, and steps to take after testing the issue: How to use safe mode on your Mac

If the behavior continues, let us know more:

  • Are you using more than one email account?
  • Who is your email service provider(s) or is this an iCloud account?
  • Does this happen with emails that have no attachments, include attachments, or both?

The more details you can provide the better.

Take care.

TammyW_03,

I have gone to Optus webmail and replicated the same email and it went through very quickly using my Optus account.

I then used my @me account to send the same email back to the same @me account and it went through very quickly, on the iMac

I then used my @optusnet account to send the same emails to the same @optusnet account and it has taken over 30 minutes and has still not come into my Inbox, in fact both of those emails are still in the Outbox.

I'm tempted to reinstall macOS again to see if it remedies the issue, I don't particularly want to start disconnecting all the printers etc yet.

TammyW_03,

I restarted the iMac so that I was no longer in Safe Mode and retried sending the two emails using the two different accounts and the Optus account was very slow.

I have already been in contact with the Optus people and they assure me that there is nothing wrong from their end, we did try sending emails on their webmail site and it did work quite Ok.

TammyW_03,

While in Safe Mode I composed an email and added 19.3 MB document to it and it took less than 2-3 minutes to appear in my Inbox. I then composed another email that had nothing in it and it also only took 2-3 minutes to appear in my Inbox, so size doesn't seem to have any bearing on the issue.

My carrier is Optus.

I do have another email account "***", I have replicated the above on that account and the result is the same.

So in Safe Mode it seems to work pretty well.

Thanks for your help much appreciated
