AirPod Pros do not connect after 14.8 update

I updated my iPhone 11 Pro to iOS 14.8 a few days ago. Ever since, my Airpod Pros do not play audio from my phone. When I put the AirPods in they make the sound like they have connected. When I go to Spotify and try and change the audio output to my AirPods, I am able to select them how ever the sound continues to come out of my phone. I have tried other apps and the sound output continues to come out of the phone speakers.

I have verified they are connected in the Bluetooth setting of my iPhone. I have tried turning off Bluetooth and turning it back on, no luck. The only solution I have found is restarting my phone which is a huge inconvenience.

Has anyone else had a similar issue?

Hi trenton154,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with playing audio through your AirPods Pro after updating your iPhone 11 Pro. We'd like to help.

You mentioned that you recently updated to iOS 14.8. Since you're having issues on that version, it would be best to back up your device and update to the newest iOS, which is iOS 15.0.2. This resource can help: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you are still unable to hear audio out of your AirPods Pro, you could try to pair them with another iOS device to see if you have the same issue. This can help you isolate this issue a bit more. If they don't play audio when connected to another device, it may be an issue with your AirPods themselves.

Let us know how that goes.

Take care!

Same issue... it stopped connecting automatically... I used to be able to have the phone speaker volume at 0 and start an app place the airpods in, hear a tone and then hear the sound in the airpods at the previously set level. Now... I have to manually play with it... and the simple trick of turning bluetooth on and off just stopped working!

It appears to be APP specific... for example... Spotify, Pandora, Youtube wont play in the airpods WITHOUT fussing with the phone now. But!!! If I dictate to Apple message and hit the microphone button it hears me. (music is playing on the iphone speaker until I hit the mic... the dictation works... and when over... music is still on the phone not airpods. For incoming calls I have to manually switch the audio from the iphone to Airpods... I think that is new behavior too.

For the last couple of days the fastest work around was to swipe down from the corner, turn Bluetooth off, and then turn it back on. Voila Music back to airpods! But this afternoon that failed to work after 6 tries.

Oddly, when I put the airpods in I hear the tone even though the music is playing on the phone speaker. So I'm guessing there is some new setting somewhere?

I did notice that the spotify "now playing" info bar at the bottom shows the bluetooth symbol when playing in the airpods and some grey phone when on teh phone speaker. Click the grey phone takes you to a "Listening on" screen.

But it has nothing to do with "backups" ColleenD1! minus 3 stars!
