LG UltraFine 4K Display - gray screen question

Works fine for a long time, and then, all of a sudden for no apparent reason, the external display goes to a blank gray screen. If I unplug/plug the Thunderbolt 2 cable back it immediately works again until it happens next time.

Have had this happen on 2 independent MacBooks. 2019 Macbook Pro and 2021 Macbook Air (M1).

It's extremely annoying.

Hello KrisDav,

We understand that you're experiencing an issue with your external display, and we'd like to help out.

You mentioned that it will work for a long time before the issue occurs; does the issue seem to occur after using the display for a specific amount of time, or does it seem to vary?

Did you use these steps to connect the external display to your Mac? Connect a display to your Mac

If the display is going blank, the "If your display is blank or not detected" section of the following page has some steps that may help: If your external display isn't detected or appears blurry on your Mac

Thanks!

KrisDav,

Thanks so much for letting us know more.

To help narrow this down further, can you also let us know which macOS version your devices are running? Find out which macOS your Mac is using

Have you had a chance to try using another cable? If so, did that help at all?

Also, do any errors or messages ever appear before the issue occurs? If so, please let us know what the error says, as that can help us get a better understanding of the issue.

Thank you!
