Why doesn't iPad turn off when cover closed?

I thought when you have a case on the iPad and you close the flap over the screen the iPad would turn off, ie screen goes black so battery is not drained. This does not happen with my iPad mini 6 but it did happen with my iPad mini 5. Couldn't find a way to fix this.

Check these settings on your iPad:

Settings > Display & Brightness >

  • Auto-Lock - is not set to Never

iPad cases that are able to lock the iPad when closed contain a tiny magnet that interacts with a hall-effect sensor embedded in the iPad.

As the location of the sensor may vary between iPad models, compatible cases that offer this feature must be designed explicitly for the specific iPad model. Many third-party cases do not have a magnet, or have the magnet incorrectly positioned.
