iPhone 13 no macro?

I upgraded from an iPhone 6 today and was shocked that my new iPhone 13 is not capable of focusing on an object closer than about 10cm, which is something iPhone 6 can do.

I understand that the Macro feature is available with IPhone 13 Pro, but I’m not willing to pay the steep price difference for the Pro to get a feature I had on the iPhone 6.

I’m so disappointed that an important feature I took for granted on a very old device has been downgraded, I’m considering just returning the iPhone 13 and waiting for the next year’s release.

Is anyone else having a similar issue?

And is there a possibility of Apple making Macro available on iPhone 13 via a software update?

These cameras are so much more sophisticated than iPhone 6. Last years crop of iPhone 12 through 12 Pro and Max did not have Macro capabilities. iPhone 13 Pro phones do and iPhone 13 doesn't. The pro models have an extra camera over the 13.

When I had my iPhone 12 Pro Max, I simply took a photo the closest I could get with an in-focus image and then cropped in after taking the photo which worked great when I needed it.

I did buy iPhone 13 Pro Max this year, not JUST for Macro photo capability but the Pro models have better features in many areas on the phone as well as better cameras. It's all about priorities. If you are within the 14 day return window and Macro photography is an important feature, you may want to return the phone and spend more for the phone which may better meet your needs.

I had iPhone 6 and remember it could take close up photos. But it could not take half the photos and videos iPhone 13 series phones can. Doesn't change the fact iPhone 13 cannot take macro photos. You need iPhone 13 Pro if this is an important feature, or do what LD150 and I suggested and that is take the photo as close as you get in-focus and then crop in after the photo has been taken.

The top one is taken perpendicular. The bottom one is taken obliquely and with the wide aperture it has a depth of field error. You cannot really compare them. Take one with the 13 directly above the subject, slightly further out then crop it to suit. I can assure you it will be a more detailed photo all other things being equal.

Ok, here's another attempt! :)

Both taken from exactly the same angle, but the 13 had to be a bit further and this time I used digital zoom to get the same framing.

The first photo is iPhone 6 as is, the second is iPhone 13 (zoomed in and resized to fit under 5mb here).

I think this might solve it for me, as I was able to focus better from further away with iPhone 13 by using digital zoom.

I'm still going to go try the 13 Pro, but this might be sufficient for my needs.

Thank you both for helping me work through this!

I did not know that iPhone 6 had a macro camera setting. If it does please post a screen shot for my education.

You should make your own choice based on need and capital available, but the iphone 6 is obsolete. If the majority of your photos involves macro (like you collect butterflies) then go for the 13 Pro

Seeing both on my computer screen, I can see that the 13 photo is obviously superior. Although neither shows the logo engraving as well as I'd like to.

I think when I started taking photos yesterday with the iPhone 13, I missed the feeling of getting physically and optically closer to the subject, which the 6 allows.

This photo was taken with the new Halide Macro setting on the iPhone 13, which is being offered as a solution to Macro-less iPhones. I don't like it at all!

I'm going to consider the iPhone 13 Pro now, as I'm still within the return window. Thank you for your replies!
