Ipad mini 6 cracked glass

Has anyone had problems with ipad mini 6 screens seemingly "spontaneously" cracking?

I had my ipad for barely 2 weeks and I noticed a few days ago when I was cleaning the glass there is - along the top near the camera - what looks like a small 'impact' crack and hairline fractures. I originally thought it was dust as it is that small!  Note, there is no damage on the case. (The photo is taken under bright light to illustrate)

I took it to the local (Canberra) Apple store, but a very belligerent and rude 'team leader' refused to budge from the corporate stance that it was 'impact' from 'accidental damage'.   I am the sole user and I would happily sign an affidavit attesting that I did NOT damage the ipad in any way, shape or form. Even my husband who is a CIO of a very large corporation was flummoxed as to how the crack occurred! The only thing which 'impacted' on the screen was my finger and the Apple pencil! (Hah, so much for 'gorilla glass'!)

So, I have two questions:

 1. Can anyone hazard a guess as to how this crack would have happened (it seems in such an odd spot)?;

2. Has anyone else had problems with the ipad mini 6 display glass?

Either way, I'd suggest anyone thinking of purchasing an ipad mini 6, be mindful of my experience. I am now essentially left with a piece of junk and being called a liar, courtesy of Apple - because Apple staff are committed to 'units' rather than 'people'.  And, no, I didn't take out 'Apple Care' because under Australian Consumer law you are rather well protected. It seems like Apple have figured that 'flawed' glass can and will be written off as 'accidental damage', thus leaving the onus completely on consumers, with little recourse but to cough up either way.

Perhaps you were indeed being prompted by the first technician 🙂

It only takes the slightest imperfection in the glass to create a weak point. Tempered glass, whilst very strong and resistant to damage, is structurally stressed - the most vulnerable areas being the edges of the glass. Even a tiny chip to the edge of the glass may cause the glass to crack.

As for the cause of the crack to your iPad, you may never find an answer. You may just have been unlucky. Perhaps, for the future, investing in a case with good edge-protection may be beneficial.

Accepting that “accidents” do happen, your Home Insurance might offer damage-cover for domestic appliances?

UPDATE

After providing feedback to Apple via their Survey, the Manager of the local store actually rang me and apologised profusely for the way I had been treated and undertook to counsel the Team Leader, and offered me a potential solution.

Long story short: after making a few phone calls, I was able to get a replacement! Sent the 'cracked' one off via mail (it had been an online purchase) and picked up the replacement a week later.

I shall be purchasing both AppleCare+ and a folio.

Lessons learnt!

It is notoriously difficult to prove that a crack is the result of a manufacturing or material defect. As such, screen damage is often excluded from warranty claims.

Apple offer a limited one-year warranty - against which you might attempt to make a claim. If making a warranty claim, your should first attempt to make a claim with your retailer - as it is most often the retailer with whom your purchase contract (and therefore your warranty) principally exists. If unsuccessful, you then have the potential backup of making a claim against the manufacturer’s limited warranty.

If you had the foresight of opting to purchase Apple’s AppleCare+ plan, this being an insurance product, you will have the security of being able to make claim with Apple regardless of fault. In such circumstances, a small excess/deductible charge is made - and you will receive a replacement (usually a reconditioned iPad of the same model and specification) iPad.

If you have purchased your iPad with a Credit Card, you may find that you have additional consumer protection - against which you might try to seek refund from the Card Issuer by arguing defective goods and a uncooperative retailer - but you should anticipate some “discussion” in regard the the disputed damage.

From your attached photo, as “devils advocate”, I can perhaps see why impact damage has been suggested as a possible explanation. Whilst I am not in any way suggesting that your iPad has suffered this fate, when examining your attached photo, visible evidence might suggest a mishap occurred…

When zooming-in, at the upper left of the main crack, the screen glass does exhibit the classic telltale signs of an impact. A spontaneous crack most usually appears as a single continuous crack with no radial “spidering” - or a compound breakage of the cover glass. Your photograph, aside from the two larger cracks, definitely illustrates a localised area of compound damage. I speculate that it is this that prompted the diagnosis that you received.

Thanks. Hadn't thought of the credit card route.

I think the 'team leader' in store had the opportunity and authority to resolve my issue, but for whatever reason choose to be rigid in her application of the 'guidelines'. She barely even looked at the crack. It was a case of this fits this criteria and that's it, without listening to any reasonable explanation. Certainly reminded me that 'loyalty' to a brand pays no dividends. Very disappointing.

Thanks again.

Yes, I can understand that. And, that is the annoying thing - no allowance for any other explanation. I knew when I went to the store it was going to be an uphill battle - my honesty against the criteria of an 'impact' crack.

But, the case is that ipad has not been used by anyone but me (my husband is the only other person in the house, and we've been in COVID lockdown) and only in the lounge room, which is carpeted. I have been going insane trying to figure how a crack with impact characteristics would occur. I didn't drop it, nothing has been dropped on it.

Interesting the first technician I spoke to asked at least twice if it was like that when it came out of the box (in hindsight, maybe I should have taken the hint!). But, in all honesty I couldn't say - it is actually very hard to see under normal light conditions.

So, my question remains: Given the background and if you accept it isn't a flaw, what on earth could cause an impact crack like this?
