Why are common words underlined in red?

After the new pages update for iPhone, most of my existing documents have half the words that suddenly show underlined in red dots. I assume this is to indicate misspellings, but they are not, at least in English. When I tap the word, it offers alternative spellings for the words that are not English words. I have gone through the settings for languages but they don’t indicate anything other than English. Has anyone else had this problem after the latest update?

You mentioned that you checked the language settings; just to confirm, did you also verify which keyboard language is selected? Here's how to check that, if you haven't done so already: Add or change keyboards on iPhone

We ask because in Pages, spelling is checked according to the language of the keyboard you’re using, not the language of the document.
