Yes, it's normal. The year has not been shown since at least High Sierra. And there is no drop down menu because clicking on the clock now opens the Notification Center.

Hello there Insomnia_artsnyc,

I understand you're having an issue with your Mac with macOS Big Sur installed, so let's see how we can help.

For a better understanding of what you're referring to, could you clarify by answering the following questions?

  • Are you seeing that the menu bar isn't shown at all times when using your Mac?
  • If the menu bar is shown at times, could you clarify when you notice the menu bar isn't present?
  • If the menu bar isn't present at all times, do you notice that placing your cursor along the top of the screen brings the menu bar present?

If you're looking for help with the menu bar and preferences, take a look at the following resource to see if this helps with what you're experiencing.

Change Dock & Menu Bar preferences on Mac

We look forward to hearing more if the preferences aren't able to help with what you're seeing.

Have a great day!
