I don't want the Mail application to be the email client for your Gmail account. I don't like the interface, I simply want Gmail to be the option when I hit the share button for my photos. I seem to not have any problems with this on my iPhone...

Or... You can make your Gmail account the default account in the Mac's Apple Mail app (here is a link to an article describing the steps). If you do that it will then be the default address the Pictures app, etc will use to forward photos, etc. In fact you can add multiple email accounts to the Apple Mai app, but only one can be the default email account.
you can try the thunderbird app

and add the gmail account to that
Because Gmail is not an app, it's a service, and you need an app to access the service. So if you don't like Mail, find another app that you do like and make that the default email client.
Personal dislikes can hardly be addressed by a support forum.
