External microphone is not detected by Macbook Pro

When I plug my USB external microphone through a thunderbolt adapter into my Macbook Pro 2017 Big Sur, there is no option for that mic on the sound input sound input devices list. There is also no option for it on the Audio MIDI Setup list. The mic was working fine a while back, but perhaps some software updates messed it up. Any ways to resolve this?

Hi there Josh726Z,

Thanks for posting about your issue with an external microphone. We'll be happy to see how we can help out with this.

You mentioned this mic used to be recognized before. Were you using the same adapter and port then?

Do other devices work with the same port and adapter? That would help to narrow this down a bit.

You might also test this in a newly-created administrator account on your Mac to help determine if this is a system-wide or user account-specific issue: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Once you sign into the new user, test it out, then sign back into your normal user account and let us know how it went.

Cheers.
