Mac won't let me download app from internet, how do I override?

Hello,

I deleted one exported file from GB I'd like to have back, but when trying to download a free recovery app, my MBPro won't let me.

How do I override that?

In Security & Privacy>General I see I have "App Store and identified developers" checked, what else do I have to do?

How do I allow something from a website be downloaded?

Downloading is one thing, running an application after you downloaded is another.

Please clarify.

When you try to launch an application for the first time you may see a dialog saying that the application is from an unidentified developer. Is that it?

If you are sure that the application is legitimate, you can bypass this: control- or right-click and choose Open. You will get a similar dialog but this time with also an Open button.

With Big Sur you have to allow the browser to access the folder where you are putting the downloaded file (the default is Downloads). Usually the first time you initiate the download macOS will ask you to allow the browser to access files in the download folder destination. If you disallow this to happen, I'm not entirely certain how to change this later on (it is part of the poor design of macOS -- I have personally tried to modify settings in the "Security & Privacy" section of System Preferences, but the "+" option was grayed out).
