CD-Rom reader doesn't show up

I plugged a new Apple Superdrive into new iMac 24" M1 via USB hub, but that didn't work. I bought a USB to USB-C adapter. That didn’t work either. The CD I inserted spins but does not show up in the finder. (Curiously, the eject icon appears , so I can at least get my disk back out.) Can you help? Thanks.

on getting a 3rd party optical drive from OWC.

Also know that the SuperDrive will not work from a hub. It must be plugged directly into the M1 Mac. That takes up one valuable port and the SuperDrive only communitates at the USB 2 speeds. Drives from OWC use the faster USB configurations. Also get a drawer loader as it's much safer that a slot loader. Also get a self powered model.
