Is there a way to open files with arbitrary file extensions?

Posing this question again since the first discussion has been closed. I have a file with a .asm extension in my iCloud drive. That means it’s a plain text file. The iPad doesn’t recognize it. The previous answer was to download Documents 5 and use it. I did download that app and when I tried to open the .asm file, it said unknown file type and wouldn’t open it. I went to my PC and changed the file name to have the .txt extension and then it opened fine with Documents 5. Is there a way to get the iPad to treat .asm files as plain text files?

You could send that .txt file you had on the PC to your iPad via email and then save it. The .asm extension is not recognized as a text file. A Google search shows that this is an assembly language source code file and can be opened with a text editor. There is no real text editor on the iPad that is configured to recognize that file as a text file, just like your PC. You should not needed Documents 5, it should have easily opened with Notes, which is a text editor as well, as long as it could recognize that it was a text file. Not all programs can recognize all unusual file extensions.
