Let’s Encrypt root certificate expiration

I’ve got an old 2011 Mac book pro running os 10.11. Now many websites give me a privacy error due to the root certificate expiration. Not sure if I can update to os 10.12 or later to fix or not. Having trouble finding that in the App Store. Thoughts?
