Since installing Monterey today, I am seeing some odd behavior on some of my apps.
In all apps I have tried (Apple and Adobe apps) I can't save files with either "save" or "save as."
Strangely, it only acts that way when I am using Sidecar to support an iPad as a second display.
When I disconnect Sidecar, and quit / restart the affected app, it goes back to normal.

nope.. but i think i found the solution. for that issue:
To those who cannot see the 12.1 update, this helped me on my M1 Mac mini and M1X MacBook Pro, both could not see the update...
1.) Open System Preferences > Software Update. Confirm that no update is available, and leave the window open.
2.) Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor.
3.) Go to View > All Processes
4.) Search for 'com.apple.MobileSoftwareUpdate.UpdateBrainService' . Select it and click Force Quit.
5.) The 12.1 Update should appear in System Preferences. Click Update Now.
6.)
The update may not download - force quit the
com.apple.MobileSoftwareUpdate.UpdateBrainService again using Activity
Monitor to start the download.
I don't know how or why this fixes it...

I have a similar problem with an external VGA display (HP LE2201w on a MacBookAir M1 with a brand-less USB-c to VGA converter)
I have not tested all programs that have a 'save' or 'save as' dialogue but I had the problem with NeoOffice (Intel) and Firefox (Universal) (both most recent versions).
After reading this discussion, I started testing what triggered the bug in relation to the Display preferences.
It turns out that if I move the Menu bar to the external display, the bug shows up. If I keep the Menu bar on the built-in display the problem does not show up, even if the application window is showing on the external display.
Further test results : If I start with the menu bar on the external display and have the application window open (the bug shows) and then move the menu bar to the built-in display, the bug remains. If I start with the menu bar on the built-in display with the application window op (the bug does not show) and then move the menu bar to the external display, the bug does show.
So for me, the menu bar needs to be on the built-in display before opening the application.
It's not pretty nor handy to have the menu bar on the built-in display which I use as the secondary display, but at least I can continue using the applications.
Exact same workflow with ableton live and adobe suite. Disconnect display, save first, reconnect… Honestly it’s a real pain
Latest version of DisplayLink is running. And new beta version has same problem as well.
Try changed System Prefs-->Displays to have the Mac as the main screen (drag white header bar onto that screen).

Yes, I find the reliable "fix" is to set the laptop as main, restart the app, and try again. Let's hope .1 fixes this.

When I wrote that reply I didn't, actually I didn't even realise there was an update.
I've now updated to 12.1 and tested: everything is solved.
