After upgrade to Monterey, "Save" and "Save As" don't work when Sidecar is being used

Since installing Monterey today, I am seeing some odd behavior on some of my apps.

In all apps I have tried (Apple and Adobe apps) I can't save files with either "save" or "save as."

Strangely, it only acts that way when I am using Sidecar to support an iPad as a second display.

When I disconnect Sidecar, and quit / restart the affected app, it goes back to normal.

Hi all.

I have the same issue. No "fix", but I have a workaround that works for me. Hopefully it helps someone here until the bug is patched.

  1. I only get this when using a secondary display. If you get this on a single display then my fix doesn't help.
  2. Go to Settings - Displays and set your laptop as your Main display. I usually have mine as my Secondary and my big screen as my Main.
  3. Quit the app not working and try again.

I find the screen switching annoying. Thankfully these M1s screen switch quickly.

FWIW, the apps that don't work properly for me until I do this are:

  • Audacity (anything to do with file handling, so open, save as, export, import, etc.) - always
  • Filemaker (making pdfs) - always
  • Numbers (save, save as) - not always, only sometimes

BTW if I set my displays to "Mirror" then I get the weird oversized modal with swathes of grey blank in the "finder window" part of the modal that Matthew was first flagging.

Hope that helps someone! I was getting colleagues to pdf my Filemaker reports until now 😂

I have same problem when using DisplayLink Manager to support multiple displays. If I am not running DisplayLink Manager, I can use SAVE AS in Mac Word, etc.

Once I run DisplayLink Manager, I can no longer use SAVE AS functionality in Word, Acrobat, etc.

I have booted via SAFE mode and have same problem.

Running Monterey, v.12.0.1 on a MacBook Pro.

This is ridiculous. I cannot shutoff DisplayLink Manager without rebooting, which means I cannot use SAVE AS unless I reboot.

"Save as" dialog is not appearing "at all" in all Microsoft 365 apps nor in preview or "Save as PDF" when external monitor is connected ... simply speechless ... c'mon, let's fix that !!! MacBook Pro running 12.0.1 ... I have to disconnect external monitor and restart to have "Save as" window back in Office Apps and even in Preview and when I connect externarnal monitor "Save as" won't appear anymore ... seriously damaging my productivity ...

I uninstalled and then re-installed the latest version of DisplyLink (1.5.0) but nothing changed ... DisplayLink is pretty useless for me, I tried and installed it to workaround the "more than one monitor only" connected issue with M1 MacBook Pro but actually it never worked (at least, for me!) ... even now that I'm connected to a Samsung U28E590 it says "No Monitor Detected" ... anyway, looks like after updating to Monterey the problem with "Save As" dialogs is related (always, at least for me) with "off scale" displays or displays that are not 16:9. I have an old (but gold) LG 29EA93 which is 21:9 and "Save as" dialog is not apearing anymore when is connected as well as per the the other 21:9 LG 29WK600. It worked fine until before the update ...

I have this same problem. I have a new MacBook Pro (2021) with no extra displays or anything extra. Most of the time I cannot save in Word or Preview. Sometimes immediately after starting or rebooting saving works for a while. I can however use Finder and move files from one folder to another without any glitches.

I think your issue is probably different from the one other people are experiencing.

You should probably start a different thread, as it is unrelated to Sidecar or external displays in general.

When you do that, post an Etrecheck report so people can look for other possible causes of the problem.

Same -- no external monitors, nothing, on a new Macbook Pro 16", M1 processor. Try to save something from Word, Mail, others -- no dialog box. Spinning beachball for a while, the app is "not responding", then it just goes back to responding as normal without every opening the dialog box. This from a fresh reboot. Very frustrating!!

nope.. but i think i found the solution. for that issue:

To those who cannot see the 12.1 update, this helped me on my M1 Mac mini and M1X MacBook Pro, both could not see the update...

1.) Open System Preferences > Software Update. Confirm that no update is available, and leave the window open.

2.) Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor.

3.) Go to View > All Processes

4.) Search for 'com.apple.MobileSoftwareUpdate.UpdateBrainService' . Select it and click Force Quit.

5.) The 12.1 Update should appear in System Preferences. Click Update Now.

6.)

The update may not download - force quit the

com.apple.MobileSoftwareUpdate.UpdateBrainService again using Activity

Monitor to start the download.

I don't know how or why this fixes it...

copied from a comment one some other blog. Thx Jonlon...

Thanks, this saved my life.

Expecting the same exact problem (although I understand it's slightly different from what the original thread is about), and it was driving me crazy.

Initially I was expecting this only on Brave, then happened to Word too so I've realised to be an OS problem.

Interesting info from my part: everything works very well when I have TWO external monitors attached. But with just one monitor, and this one being main one, I experience this problem.

Making the laptop monitor as main one as you suggested, and restarting the affected app, "fixed" it (although it's quite annoying for me not using the big monitor as primary.....)

Please patch this asap, it's really frustrating and god knows how many ppl are currently yelling w/o knowing what's going on....
