After upgrade to Monterey, "Save" and "Save As" don't work when Sidecar is being used

We appreciate you taking part in the Apple Support Communities and outlining issues you are experiencing with the new macOS Monterey release. If we understand correctly, you’re no longer able to save a file when you’re using you iPad to extend your display with the Sidecar feature but it returns to normal when you disconnect your iPad. 

Is this new to macOS Monterey in that you were able to save files using Sidecar on your previous macOS version? If so, we have a few questions: 

- Have you had a chance to update your iPad to iPadOS 15.1 yet?

- Are you mirroring your Mac desktop or extending it? 

- Does it seem to matter whether you’re attempting to save from an app that you are displaying on the iPad or Mac display?

- Where are you attempting to save the file? (e.g. iCloud Drive, locally to your Mac, etc.) 

Hopefully these answers will help us find an explanation or resolution together.

I Have the same kind of issue with "save as" option on Ableton Live and Pro Tools. Same as Matthew, the "save as" box opens empty, I can't do anything. Also, when I open Pro Tools, I can't create a new file. It does the same kind of bug when the app wants to prompt the location of this new file I'm creating.

Important matter, all this happening only when I have my second screen plugged in. When I unplug the second screen, everything seems to be working fine.

I'm having the same problem when using a second display (extended desktop) So far it's been an issue when using Vectorworks and Sketchup. There's no way to save your work, you essentially have to disconnect the display, reopen the app, start over, save First, then reconnect your second display, save will work after that because there's no pop-up prompt, but you cannot Save As.

I hope Apple can resolve this quickly as it is counterproductive.

I have same problem when using DisplayLink Manager to support multiple displays. If I am not running DisplayLink Manager, I can use SAVE AS in Mac Word, etc.

Once I run DisplayLink Manager, I can no longer use SAVE AS functionality in Word, Acrobat, etc.

I have booted via SAFE mode and have same problem.

Running Monterey, v.12.0.1 on a MacBook Pro.

This is ridiculous. I cannot shutoff DisplayLink Manager without rebooting, which means I cannot use SAVE AS unless I reboot.

"Save as" dialog is not appearing "at all" in all Microsoft 365 apps nor in preview or "Save as PDF" when external monitor is connected ... simply speechless ... c'mon, let's fix that !!! MacBook Pro running 12.0.1 ... I have to disconnect external monitor and restart to have "Save as" window back in Office Apps and even in Preview and when I connect externarnal monitor "Save as" won't appear anymore ... seriously damaging my productivity ...

I have this same problem. I have a new MacBook Pro (2021) with no extra displays or anything extra. Most of the time I cannot save in Word or Preview. Sometimes immediately after starting or rebooting saving works for a while. I can however use Finder and move files from one folder to another without any glitches.

I uninstalled and then re-installed the latest version of DisplyLink (1.5.0) but nothing changed ... DisplayLink is pretty useless for me, I tried and installed it to workaround the "more than one monitor only" connected issue with M1 MacBook Pro but actually it never worked (at least, for me!) ... even now that I'm connected to a Samsung U28E590 it says "No Monitor Detected" ... anyway, looks like after updating to Monterey the problem with "Save As" dialogs is related (always, at least for me) with "off scale" displays or displays that are not 16:9. I have an old (but gold) LG 29EA93 which is 21:9 and "Save as" dialog is not apearing anymore when is connected as well as per the the other 21:9 LG 29WK600. It worked fine until before the update ...

I think your issue is probably different from the one other people are experiencing.

You should probably start a different thread, as it is unrelated to Sidecar or external displays in general.

When you do that, post an Etrecheck report so people can look for other possible causes of the problem.

That’s a good suggestion that is worth trying. The interface for doing it, however, has changed in Monterey. Instead of dragging the white menubarlet: click display settings.. select the built-in display and choose main display in the popup menu.

Also, it isn't just Sidecar, but happens (sometimes) with just a second monitor hooked up. I first observed this (extremely annoying behaviour because You can't save work!) in ZBrush, then Clip Studio Paint. After resetting my ZBrush preferences, and doing something I don't remember to CSP, all was fine. Until yesterday, when this happened in even more apps. Blender couldn't display subwindows, CSP couldn't save, also ZBrush, even Apple Motion.

Couple of weeks back I spent days with ZBrush support as I suspected it was an isolated problem and related to the app. But seeing this in many other apps, even Apple's own Motion, I suspect it is something in Monterey.

Just another update (trial and error):

1) MS Excel "Save As..." works if I have one secondary display (with the secondary display set as main display)

2) MS Excel "Save As..." didn't work if I have two secondary displays (with the first secondary display set as main display)

3) MS Excel "Save As..." works if I have two secondary displays (with the secondary display set as main display) - regardless of which display shows the excel window.

4) MS Excel "Save As..." always work if I set the Mac as the main display!

I am confused now.

Has there been a fix for this? I have this problem too. I am using a mac mini M1 and sidecar with my ipad.

Updated everything to the latest versions.

Ohh on the side note. I changed my display setting from scaled to non scaled and fixed 60hz. All other options resulted in a flickering pictures sometimes.

Just purchased the new 14 inch macbook pro with M1 Pro. I have noticed on several occasions now that I was unable to Save or Save As from different applications. I first saw this with Adobe Illustrator and assumed it was an Adobe issue, but I have seen this several more times with Microsoft Word (yo). This is some kind of Monterey issue. Not connected to sidecar, but am using a second monitor.

MacBook 14 inch M1 Pro

Is anybody affected by this using intel macs? I am trying to figure out if the problem is specific to Apple Silicon macs. I have tested with external displays, with ipad as sidecar and even both at the same time. I have tried Apple and also third party applications. I was unable to reproduce the problem on my 2019 16” MBP.
