Voice and Data is gone after 15.1
After updating to iOS 15.1, Voice & Data is missing. How can I switch between LTE and 4g now?

Ok, I can confirm that this has to do with AT&T, not IOS, and that it’s because the 3g network is being shutdown.
I had them change my plan to a 5g plan and once that was done I got the menu “Voice & Data to show up and it gave me the choice between 5g and LTE.
I than had them change my plan back to one that does not have 5g and the menu, “Voice & Data” was removed.

Talk to your carrier. The menu setting that allows you to make changes to your cellular selections is controlled by the carrier file that is installed on your iPhone. Usually an iOS update will update the carrier file based on what the carrier sends to Apple, and the files are downloaded and installed together. This is not an iOS issue and is not an Apple issue. The fact that the technician did not call you back has nothing to do with his ability or inability to change your issue. There is nothing for them to fix.
Ok, I think I have my answer. AT&T got rid of their 3g network and in the menu where it gave me the option to choose 4g, it wasn’t really 4g, it was “3g plus”. Since I’m not on a 5g plan and they got rid of the 3g network (3g plus or what they were calling 4g) that leaves me with just the LTE. If all I have available to me is the LTE there is no reason for them to give me the menu option (Voice & Data). If you have a 5g plan they give you the menu options to switch between 5g and LTE.
This is really crappy news. The LTE has always been good for data, going to websites, using the gps, email, whatever, but when in a bad cell service area, I would switch to 4g (3g plus) and get good service to be able to talk to someone on the phone. Now I’m stuck with the bad service when that happens.
What version of iPhone are you using? The ability to make adjustments in the Cellular section of Settings is dependent on your cellular carrier. They carrier file is what sets these options. Make contact with them to see what they say.
My understanding is that AT&T will shut down 3G in February of next year. The problem of not having the option to switch to 3G is not the carrier but is in the iOS 15.1 update. I had the same experience mentioned above and was able to recover the 3G option only after downgrading the iOS back to 15.02.
You can "restore" or downgrade from iOS15.1 to 15.02 using a signed ipsw file now. All other previous iOS versions are not allowed or unsigned. This does resolve the voice and data problem with loss of 3G which is a temporary option if your carrier AT&T or VMNO can not change your plan to 4G(LTE)/5G at this time. My MVNO does not plan to switch until February. My understanding is that the transition (discontinuing 3G, expanding 5G) will come with stronger 4G(LTE) signals so that those of us that have relied on 3G for that reason will continue to have a functional signal.
Hello Zinsco45,
Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. We understand from your message that you no longer are seeing an option under Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options for Voice & Data. We're happy to look into this further with you.
If you turn on the Data Roaming option, do you then have an option for Voice & Data? Check out this article for more details: About the LTE options on your iPhone.
All the best.
5Ge is LTE. It’s like an LTE plus. When you had the menu “Voice & Data” it gave you the option to choose LTE or 4G. The 4G wasn’t really 4G, it was like a 3G plus. They are shutting down the 3G network so they took that choice away. Now you only have LTE. When it says 5Ge, that just means you are connecting to a stronger LTE, like an LTE plus.
AT&T and probably other carriers just want it to look like we have something Breyer than we really do. They have made things so confusing by doing this. Bottom line, you do have LTE and that’s all you have
It was only for testing purposes. The guy at AT&T switched me over to a 5G plan just to see what would happen and than switched me back, so no it didn’t cost me anything. If you want a 5G plan at AT&T, you have to pay for a premium, unlimited plan, mine is an old family sharing plan that is much cheaper.
Not sure why you are asking this, because switching to a 5G plan would not help the situation at all. Sure, it will give you the “Voice & Data” menu back, but it will only give you the choice between LTE and 5G. It won’t give you the option to choose 4G (3G plus) because they took that away. They have been shutting down that network and will be completely finished shutting it down come February.
We are screwed in many areas when it comes to signal. The 3G towers are being converted to 5G and nothing is being done to improve LTE like someone here was thinking.
Everybody you know that can switch back to 4g must not be updated to 15.1. It is an AT&T issue. The menu’s under cellular are produced by the carrier not apple.
If having the option to switch to 3G is important to you, I suggest downgrading back to iOS 15.02 until Apple fixes the update or 3G is no longer available.
Are you updated to IOS 15.1? Before the update my phone did have Voice & Data. My wife has a 12 Pro and when we updated hers to 15.1 it also removed Voice & Data. Mine also reads AT&T 48.0. I will show a screenshot of what it looked like before the update
It’s not about a fix, there is no fix, unless you mean for 4 months. AT&T along with everyone else are shutting down the 3g network. I have heard they will do this February next year. Why they took our ability to switch to 4g (3g plus) with this latest update (15.1) instead of waiting until they actually shut it down is something I don’t know and something that ****** me off. Maybe they know that apple won’t make another update until after they shut it down so they had to do it on this one. I don’t know but it stinks. I don’t have a backup from when I was on 15.0.02, so if I downgrade it will be to much of a pain cuz I would have to redo so much and lose some stuff.
It’s not both, it definitely is the carrier. You are correct that it is a moot point, though. In a few months it won’t matter because they will end 3g completely, as you said. A better place to discuss this is on the AT&T forum. Here is a link to a post I made there about it.
No. This is an iOS issue. I use to use 4G everyday at work because LTE doesn’t work great but doesn’t manually switch over. My coworkers who did not upgrade are still able to switch over.
