Voice and Data is gone after 15.1

After updating to iOS 15.1, Voice & Data is missing. How can I switch between LTE and 4g now?

Ok, I can confirm that this has to do with AT&T, not IOS, and that it’s because the 3g network is being shutdown.

I had them change my plan to a 5g plan and once that was done I got the menu “Voice & Data to show up and it gave me the choice between 5g and LTE.

I than had them change my plan back to one that does not have 5g and the menu, “Voice & Data” was removed.

Talk to your carrier. The menu setting that allows you to make changes to your cellular selections is controlled by the carrier file that is installed on your iPhone. Usually an iOS update will update the carrier file based on what the carrier sends to Apple, and the files are downloaded and installed together. This is not an iOS issue and is not an Apple issue. The fact that the technician did not call you back has nothing to do with his ability or inability to change your issue. There is nothing for them to fix.

“This is not an iOS issue and is not an Apple issue.” Well, there is one thing that I know for sure and that is… I did not cause the problem, therefore it’s one of their issue. In regards to the technician not calling me back, I will believe what I want to because either way I should have receive a call back per his response to me during our last conversation.

It was only for testing purposes. The guy at AT&T switched me over to a 5G plan just to see what would happen and than switched me back, so no it didn’t cost me anything. If you want a 5G plan at AT&T, you have to pay for a premium, unlimited plan, mine is an old family sharing plan that is much cheaper.

Not sure why you are asking this, because switching to a 5G plan would not help the situation at all. Sure, it will give you the “Voice & Data” menu back, but it will only give you the choice between LTE and 5G. It won’t give you the option to choose 4G (3G plus) because they took that away. They have been shutting down that network and will be completely finished shutting it down come February.

We are screwed in many areas when it comes to signal. The 3G towers are being converted to 5G and nothing is being done to improve LTE like someone here was thinking.

5Ge is LTE. It’s like an LTE plus. When you had the menu “Voice & Data” it gave you the option to choose LTE or 4G. The 4G wasn’t really 4G, it was like a 3G plus. They are shutting down the 3G network so they took that choice away. Now you only have LTE. When it says 5Ge, that just means you are connecting to a stronger LTE, like an LTE plus.

AT&T and probably other carriers just want it to look like we have something Breyer than we really do. They have made things so confusing by doing this. Bottom line, you do have LTE and that’s all you have

This happened to me too. Whether an IOS problem or my carrier issue, I got the shaft. My carrier is Cricket and don’t know where to go without paying premium $$$ to get good signal coverage. What I do know is this change happened as soon as I updated IOS 15.1. My husband hasn’t updated and I’m encouraging him now to. It’s just because LTE in rural Texas is bad really bad. At least when I had the option to switch to 3g plus I could stream an entire show on Roku tv now it just freezes and disconnects after a few minutes. Android 4g- 5G phones are so much cheaper than iPhone thinking about switching to one of those phones but would lose a whole lot of Apple apps and downloaded information. It wasn’t broke hate that whoever’s fault it is just messed up a good thing for me.

It is possible that it may be both the carrier and the recent iOS 15.1 upgrade that has caused this problem. But the option to use 3G is still available with the previous iOS version, iOS 15.02 with AT&T. I had the same problem and was fortunate to downgrade back to the 15.02 version in the two week window that Apple allowed before "unsigning" that version and eliminating that option. And I still have the 3G option for now. Apple does not approve of reverting to previous versions after that two week time frame. My understanding is that Crickett uses AT&T as their carrier and they will sunset the 3G in February 2022 so the iOS version issue may be moot. It is possible that after the "sunset" AT&T's LTE band will improve reception in your and my area?? One can only hope. You can consider switching to another MNVO that uses another carrier that will use 3G a little longer, although all carriers will eventually sunset the 3G network. The option to use 3G with the latest iOS version of 15.1 may still not be possible even with another phone carrier and I would check to be sure before a change. For those of us in this situation, I would advise not to upgrade to iOS 15.1 at least until AT&T's sunset of 3G in February of 2022.

It’s not both, it definitely is the carrier. You are correct that it is a moot point, though. In a few months it won’t matter because they will end 3g completely, as you said. A better place to discuss this is on the AT&T forum. Here is a link to a post I made there about it.

This is Apple trying to phase out older phones…again. I have an iPhone X, where LTE never worked properly for voice. From day one of buying the phone new, just after launch, tech support told me to turn off LTE. Now that LTE is the only option, my phone is no longer usable for making phone calls. Apple has a history of forced obsolescence, this is just the most recent chapter.
