MacBook pro 2019 after monterey update the computer won’t turn on at all.

tried the usual suspects (pram, pressing command-option-r etc.) but nothing. Computer is also perfectly powered but nothing, no chime, no harddrive sound just a dead computer after the monterey update.

seems like a computer without power but it is fully powered

Solution:

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/apple-configurator-2/apdebea5be51/mac

Problem: you need a second computer with the same or an higher operating system version.

As I didn’t have a second machine with Monterey already running, I went to the Apple Store and they revived the T2 chip. Problem solved and I hope this will also help others who faced bricked computers after the Monterey install.

This did not work at all. There is a serious global problem with this update that should be stopped because many people like me are reporting having a brick Mac trying to update with Monterey. Apple Store reconfirmed me I was not the only one in my city. Apple please stop this defective update for some macs. I was highly recommended not to update other older Macs (the problematic is only one year old) and that friends and relatives don’t do it. There should be some Apple statement by now to stop this chaotic situation for some. DFU is the solution and worked to me in Apple Store and I quickly suggested after reading reports. It’s awful some people make you feel you haven’t tried anything for solving typical Mac problems.

I took the 2018 MBP to the apple store. The Genius Bar said tht they were not surprised as motherboard damage can happen after an update. They said my MBP is dead but they can check if the damage was due to a safety issue or not, given the burning smell. If it is they will fix for free. If not, he said the fixing cost doesn’t justify it. Perhaps buy a new one.

My 2018 MacBook Pro was bricked. I found the solution. The T2 chip that boots the system was corrupted during Monterey install. Here is where I found the procedure: https://mrmacintosh.com/how-to-restore-bridgeos-on-a-t2-mac-how-to-put-a-mac-into-dfu-mode/. This solution rescued my laptop. It is not for the faint of heart. Probably a trip to the Genius bar is

best for most people.

All’s turned out well. The Apple Genius assistant was able to do a Revive procedure and then did the Monterey update. So I’ve got all my data back and an up to date operating system. Shouldn’t have happened but I’ve learnt a lesson - wait a few months before doing an update. Thanks for all the support and advice during a stressful time! I hope others have as positive an outcome

See if you can: 1 - boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support. If successful try a normal reboot; 2 - boot into the Recovery volume (boot with just the Command + R keys held down). If successful launch Disk Utility and run First Aid on all of the volumes; 3 - see if this Apple document has any helpful tips: If your Mac doesn't start up all the way - Apple Support

It’s making me super angry this is happening to many people and my acquaintance in another part of the planet and many Apple Stores nor Apple acknowledge after many days that there is a problem with this defective update for many people all around the world. I am thinking that maybe I should request later a replacement of logic board for free, if this was really my problem… This undesired laptop brick death can happen to me again later with no Apple Care.

I suggest you find someone that can help you with DFU revive if your Apple Store does not want to help so you can have again a functional laptop and use Big Sur. I was told in my Apple Store not to update my two other older Macs for not having this undesirable outcome again and wait for more updates solving this problem. Let’s see…

My MacBook Pro is 2017.

Note: I did have to keep the on/off (finger print sensor) down a few times for 20 secs before something clicked. And I did have to leave it 5 mins to get enough power into it to even show the battery symbol (the reason why I knew it was not charging with the original brick but a third party cable is that I could see the battery symbol indicating I needed to connect to power; hence I used the original cable (then changed USBC ports??) then it worked).

Update: I kept my hub connected (power and peripherals) but also connected the original power brick and original cable to another USBC port. This morning it seems to be fine, woke up immediately, displaying on my monitor through the hub.

As I posted earlier in the week, my 2019 MacBook Pro would not start a few days after I updated to Monterey. Nothing that I could do or the Apple Store did got it going again. The Genius Bar person on Sunday claimed the problem was "sand and dirt" inside the computer messing up the internals, but that didn't explain why my relatively new machine went cold dead. That was before postings in the Forum showed this was really due to the Monterey update, so I had to accept Apple's recommendation to have my computer rebuilt (out of warranty, with no Apple Care, unfortunately).

My computer was returned Thursday, and it definitely works. Their form explains what they did including,"We performed a clean installation of the latest Mac operating version verified on your computer." Amusingly, they did NOT do so. They did NOT install Monterey! Instead they installed Catalina. I can only assume that the Apple Repair specialists realized that it is NOT safe to install Monterey on MacBookPro's!
